Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski boots as hand luggage Monarch Charter Manc - Grenoble

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Does any have any recent experience of taking ski boots as hand luggage flying Manchester to Grenoble on a Monarch charter?

We got sent an email stating they were not allowed but trying to work out whether its worth risking it. I'd rather not get turned back at security only to have to queue at check in a second time.

You're more likely to be told at check in. If you get turned around at security I don't think you'd have the option of going back and checking your boots in.

Why not email Monarch if they say it is fine print out the email and take it with you if they say no then put the boots in the hold.

Pack them in your suitcase, not worth the hassle at check in.

If you've been told they're not allowed, why would you bother trying it.

Mine always get packed, last thing I want to do is lug them around an airport, then try to squeeze them in an overhead locker.

@stusno, who was the email from?

Nothing a cursory glance at the Monarch website suggests restriction - however, what may be implicated is that ski boot bags are not well shaped to go in many overhead lockers on smaller (e.g.737) aircraft.

I think that as long as you put them in a standard Monarch sized case i.e. 56 x 40 x 25cm (and be strict about the dimensions as they may easily check that) you'll be fine. Worst case, wear them on the flight.

@stusno, I always pack mine in hand luggage. They fit nicely into a small (Ryanair compatible) wheeled suitcase that could have anything in it and looks like ordinary hand luggage. I've flown out of Luton, Stansted, Heathrow, Munich, and Geneva like this and security have never commented.

@jocrad, I don't find it a hassle to wheel them around an airport. I would find it a major hassle if my boots were lost or delayed - rental boots are excruciating, no way could I ski a whole day in them.

Having spent a few weeks alleviating problems with the fit on my new boots it would make my holiday a nightmare should they go missing.

They're packed in a regulation size bag so going to go for it.

Thanks for the advice.

Is it also under the regulation weight? Losing them due to them being taken off you somewhere between check in and boarding could be very inconvenient. Mine (which have also taken a lot of fitting) always travel in my holdall in the hold.

@stusno, does it look like a regular bag? or does it say, f'rinstance, Salomon on the side?

@sugarmoma666, Lufthansa allegedly have an 8kg limit on hand luggage but I have never, ever seen it checked. Monarch is 5kg but I can't see that checked either.

Monarch certainly checked hand baggage weight at LGW twice last season.

I've also experienced Monarch confirming with each passenger at boarding that there are no ski boots in their carry on baggage.
Before Xmas I flew with Swiss and they were checking the size and weight of hand baggage at the final boarding gate.
On our Monarch flight next week the hand baggage weight limit is 5kg, so you'd struggle with boots in that allowance. There's another thread somewhere that mentioned Monarch were weighing hand baggage at check in at Gatwick this year.

If you're on, say, an RJ100 (SWISS), the luggage bins are generally too small for many things and under the wings about the size of a large paperback. So they will check what you're boarding with. However, anything they take from you there will at least be hand loaded onto the same aircraft that you're on and sometimes available for collection as you de-plane. So at least you know your ski boots will reach the same airport as you.

I would be very nervous these days about NOT having my boots with me. If you go heli-skiing for example, you are very strongly advised to have them as handluggage (as options for a satisfactory trip if they're lost are very limited).

I'd make sure I was under the 5kg limit and take the risk that I had to put them on. Mind you, I'd not be flying Monarch charter anyway if I could help it.

@Gämsbock, but if you can't take them as hand luggage. what choice do you have? I would rather them be in my suitcase, one less item of baggage to go missing and better protected than having to check in a separate boot bag.

I cant speak for Manchester but we flew Monarch out of Gatwick at Christmas and they were weighing hand luggage at check-in. I carried my boots as hand luggage in an overhead friendly sized bag. They were slightly over the 5kg allowance but were still allowed. Definitely not a problem through security at Gatwick and there were no weight checks or security problems at Grenoble.

From the FAQ section of monarch website for ZB scheduled flights, may be different for charters, no mention of no ski boots, I planned to carry mine in a carry on size bag, think I'll print out this info if they give me grief at the gate

a) One piece of hand baggage no bigger than 56 x 40 x 25cm (including wheels and handles. There’ll be a size gauge at the airport to check this) and no heavier than 10 kilos, plus a small duty free bag from the departure airport

Just to update. No issues at all getting boots through as hand luggage. We didn't mention it at check in and no issues at security or boarding.

There seems to be a weight difference for hand luggage between Monarch Charter (5kg) and Monarch Scheduled (10kg). You can easily carry boots within the 10kg allowance but my boots and carry on bag are just under 6kg.

I have been carrying mine in my hand luggage for years and security have been fine with it, not sure why Monarch would have a problem other than another scam to charge more
