Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Still powder and good off piste to be had in French Alps

Poster: A snowHead
Drove through this part of the world on New Year Eve (twice) and saw the amount of snow, and thought well worth a trip.

From home in Serre it's just over the hour to Modane and then we chose, having looked at the stats etc that Val Frejus was where it's at, and we were not disappointed!

Who'd have thought we'd be doing gnarly off piste couloirs straight off the chair lift ?

So as the pictures prove there is pow still to be had, and the place (Val Frejus) was so empty!!

In fact there were at times more people in the air Speed Flying above us than on the actual mountain. Evidently Val Frejus is the Speed Flying mecca, and we saw a fair number of people learning!

Anyway your correspondent is currently in Val Cenis and tomorrow we go to Bonneval which following on from a couple of conversations sounds tres interesant, bit of a mini La Grave with only a few lifts topping out at 3,000m on N facing aspect.

Left Val Cenis and headed all the way up the valley to Bonneval sur Arc this morning around 09:00.

No where near the same amount of snow as yesterday in Val Frejus as we were advised by a few peeps we spoke to but still a good day skiing.

Only around 5 lifts, with the highest at 3,000m

As we suspected quite hard core and huge potential, and had been skied out far more than Val Frejus yesterday.

From the top you can see the lifts on the Iseran above Val D'Isere.

We still skied off piste for 70% of the time only rejoining the piste to get back to the lifts and go all the way back down.

Was harder to find the stashes but we did find a fair bit, along with a lot of crud, but was challenging and we did get leg burn.

A lot of avalanche activity and at one point was pretty scary, and then we came across one that had happened in a gulley where we had skied only an hour or so earlier.

And one of my mate showing that there was still some untracked to be had.......

Got back to Serre in well under two hours.

Twas a nice little road trip and always good to go somewhere new and off the beaten track as it were.

Looks like some untracked snow, but is it really powder? ie light, fluffy and can't be pressed together in your hand. Looks more consolidated than that.

@musehead, well as it hasn't snowed for nigh on two weeks rolling eyes

The higher you ski at the better chance of the snow quality (and coverage). And with the recent strong winds that also helps in producing soft snow.

But alas no it is not light fluffy pow, we've only had that for two days so far this season as the wind did for it so quickly after it fell.

And yes both in Val Frejus and Bonneval that is all from the lifts though we were packing skins in case of a navigational error or we were able to ski down beyond a lift in good snow.

I was actually tracking my day with the GPS (only usually do that when touring) and this is the track log https://www.strava.com/activities/238412956

Still some powder to be had at altitude in the Tarentaise. And yes, it's light, fluffy and can't be pressed together in your hand. Getting wind affected and tracked, of course, but still some nice snow for those who know where the stashes are and are prepared to hike.

@musehead, it snowed last weekend, so it's hardly a big deal.

Just getting harder and harder to find and nigh on impossible here as I reckon you've got to get well above 3,000m on north facing slopes that has not been wind affected by the recent wind(s), and again today it's howling. Plus is damn dangerous with so much windblown slab around, though I see down here higher risk than up in Savoie
