Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Off piste routes Monte Rosa

Heading to Gressoney at the start of Feb with 5 days of guiding and instruction and a free ski day. No experience of the area, I'm sure we'll just be doing what the guide suggest on the day but make look to get a guide for the last day too.

Is it possible to ski to Zermatt?

@Bene, It's a bit beyond me, but I have come across this site which seems to have a lot of info.

It is, but I think you'll find it involves the use of a helicopter to drop you on the flanks of one of the main Monte Rosa summits, then your guide will take you through some pretty serious glacier terrain to Zermatt, then back over to Champoluc via the Kleine Matterhorn cable car

There's quite a lot of accessible off piste around Gressoney, but without knowing anything about you I can't really suggest anything!

The guide will be able to show you routes on a map and there's a book of routes you can buy locally (in English and with very pretty pictures!), but you've got to take responsibility for getting round safely if you're heading out without a guide.

Personally, I'd hire a guide. It'll be safer, more fun, less stressful, and you'll be able to focus on your skiing rather than route finding. There's PLENTY to do there...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Our guide wanted to take us on the Zermatt route last year but instead of a heli we stayed in a hut the night before (Capanna Giovanni GNIFETTI - not in Feb though!) Unfortunately, high winds the next morning could have meant a very expensive and boring taxi ride back to Alagna were the lifts to shut so we skied back down to Alagna instead... It is supposed to be a fantastic day though.

The book is great but as @hum3 says, better to hire a guide and tick the routes off in the bar afterwards!

Thanks for all the responses. I really wanted to know if it was achievable in a day without a helicopter or huts.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I'll have a guide for 5 days then depending how the body is holding up will look to book an extra day.

May sound weird?! But I've always wanted to see the Matterhorn, yet not enough to make to Cervinia or Zermatt (yet).

@Bene, you can see the matterhorn from many of the Monterosa peaks without even going off piste.

Also, you're on a course aren't you? I would have thought the week's itinerary will already be sketched out.

Just to confirm, you can see Matterhorn from the Monterosa ski area. You can also see Mont Blanc. Some pretty good views there!

@under a new name, Yep 5 full days with a guide then a final free ski day which I hope can get some like minded people on the course together for another guided day. Then again if I'm broken I might just fancy a more gentle day on the pistes...... How's the hand by the way?

@geoffers, @J2R, Thanks, didn't realise this! Certainly has whetted the appetites!

Cheers

@Bene, just for you...

Ring finger pre-reduction

Little finger metacarpal post screwing about

Trivial injury, innocuous fall, although we think I dropped about 5 feet onto my hand. Almost pain free in its huge bandage, we'll see how we do when it comes off later. Shocked

Bene will be posting pics like this if he intends to spend 5 days off piste on monte rosa this year...rock and boilerplate, what was a promising start this year seems to have melted, frozen, melted, frozen. Not even really pleasant skinning and muddy walkouts on all descents to lower valleys (which they all pretty much end up at) good luck with the Alps in February maybe you'll get lucky and end up harvesting some corn...I'm off to Hokkaido

You can ski to Zermatt but it is a huge day. Some take a helicopter to do it in a day. Some stay in Zermatt over night to skin up, only the super fit do it in a day. It is also very pricey as a one way up the Kleine Matterhorn is eye-wateringly expensive. A couple of weeks ago you couldn't ski anywhere near the valley floor in the Ayas valley either making it too early to realistically do the tour. But don't worry, you will see the Matterhorn many times and there are some great routes. Think about the Felikjoch from the Quintino Sella Hut. Straightforward navigation, great ski, high, should still be in good condition. Glacier not too crevassed.
