Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

packing 2 skis into one bag

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
is there a right or wrong way to pack 2 pairs of skis into one bag to go into aircraft hold? ie bases of one pair together or should the bindings be facing each other and the bases outside?.

also should the brakes be lifted up and held with straps?

i was going to set the rear bindings to the release position.

sorry if this seems to be a daft question - but as the saying goes unless you know the answer there is no such thing as a daft question. Blush

Leave the bindings in "boots in" position and wrap a towel around each pair of skis is our usual approach.

I'm not sure if its right or not, but I use various combinations of:
1) removing the bindings (if they're rail bindings) which saves a lot of space
2) tip to tail
3) binding to binding
4) skis completely separate with brakes strapped up
5) skis together

Then I stuff loads of other clothes around them. As @ansta1, says, I always leave the bindings down (boots in setting) as its more compact.

I managed to get 5 pairs of skis into 2 single ski bags this Xmas. I was also proud that 5 of us used 97kg of our 100kg baggage allowance!

I don't think there's really a wrong way. Skis are designed to take a fair bit of abuse so there's not much that can happen to them in a ski bag that'd be worse than you jumping on them. I put mine in with the bases together on both pairs of skis. I put a bit of bubble wrap (or clothing) around the bindings, mostly to avoid any scratches from being rubbed against the other bindings or poles.

Lots of padding and bindings down. I get my skis and our 2 kids' skis in a roller bag wrapped in lots of gear, eg fleeces, socks, etc

@yorkshirelad, i was only looking at the 2 sets of skis in a bag to get under the 15kg allowance as standard ski carriage on a charter flight. surely a snowtube or the likes of would not get under 15kg with 2 pairs of skis and poles in it. However i do plan on buying a skitube for march when we travel to colorado for 2 weeks.

Check if the airline allow 2 sets of skis in the 15kg limit. I know that Thomas Cook don't. Seems stupid, but this is how they earn extra money!
