Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Jones Hovercraft or Flagship

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey,

Looking to buy the other half either a Jones Hovercraft or flagship for xmas but really cant decide between them. He currently has a Bataleon Jam and a Ride Dh2

He likes charging around the mountain on piste but where ever possible also likes to go off piste and is comfortable riding blacks and reds

The flagship seems to me to be more of a charging board compared to the Hovercraft ??? So thoughts ?? Anyone tried both ???

Not tried either but have read a lot of the postings of a Swiss lady called Neni on another forum. She loves her Flagship on smooth pistes and in powder but will swap to another board when it gets chopped up and bumpy. I'm pretty sure she's tried a Hovercraft as well but raves about the Flagship. A lot. Personally I trust her judgement.

Do you know what his stance is? Is he riding duck i.e. negative angle on the back foot?

Hovercraft is more powder orientated board. Its designed to be shorter so could be less stable on high speeds.
Flagship getting lots of good feedbacks from many riders. Personally I opted for for rossi because it's cheaper and Jones worked for rossi before, basically flagship is similar board to what rossi does now.

You could also check Neversummer and Prior, they do good boards as well.

Assuming that you are after a powder board (a la Hovercraft) as your other half already rides a Bataleon, I'd go for a Whitegold (Joint venture with Bataleon and has TBT) Shaka:-

@ed48, I was chatting to a fella at TSA in Bristol and he was saying that the Hovercraft was amazingly good on piste, and that part of the design was taken from a race board that JJ had riden.

@trainee snowboard jedi, If you talking about +12 lead, -6 trailing then yeah, that's basically my stance for Business as usual riding for 10 years or more.
@rogg, Looking at the reviews out there, there's little to choose between the two on piste- both very capable, the Hovercraft comes to live in the powder, and the Flagships a bit better in the park (i.e. it doesn't stink), and that's about it.
@snow_badger, I suspect Mr Badger would be a happy chappie if he got either

I understood that topic starter are looking at universal all mountain, freeride board, rather than dedicated pow board. So I think flagship is much better for that.
Pow boards like hovercraft, are designed to be shorter, for maneuver and have hybrid profile for float. Thats because most often the safe pow environment is the forest.
The racing boards are longer that normal and have full camber for speed and stability onpiste.
Im sure hovercraft will ride well on piste, but I would not choose it for single universal board. The second board for powder is a great choice.

I think you're right but as he already has a Jam which is great on piste / all mountain board. Why not supplement it with a pow board for those offpiste days.

I can't remember who makes the Jones' stuff - it's Niedecker I think, which is a good thing. I doubt Rossi boards use the same construction/ factories, although I'd be interested to know if they do. Does anyone actually know.

For information, race boards aren't necessarily longer - modern slalom boards are similar in length to the equivalent powder boards. I believe that no formal race has been won on glass fibre for over a decade - that's the most significant difference I'd say.

Agreed, don't buy a powder board, especially if you're asking about it on here.

If you can find UK shop people who can actually ride... that's good, but you never actually know how well until you see them do it.

That's a good point, they are an enthusiastic bunch and I've always assumed they are outstanding riders, but who knows?

I was looking at both the (carbon) flagship and last years and this years Hovercraft in Tignes. The Hovercraft was far cheaper than the Flagship/Carbon Flagship which might be a factor? Personally I'd have gone for the Hovercraft but it is a very personal choice.
Boards made by Nidecker (Jones) are top quality. 2 of my favourite rides are the Platinum and Megalite and I still ride many of their race boards on white concrete days.

I'm probably not going to be a lot of use on this thread, cos I'm just gonna whine on about how utterly awesome the Flagship is absolutely everywhere except for the park*, and I've never tried a Hovercraft.

*Actually, that's not true. It's rubbish uphill too. So I bought a Solution.

I had a Solution, awesome board till it undressed itself (some kind of recognised manufacturing fault) - it was warranty replaced, but the shop didn't have a replacement on hand so I got an Anthem which is also great. I keep debating whether it's worth getting a Hovercraft. I only go 1 or 2 weeks a year and 2 boards seems like overkill, but it doesn't stop the hankering. I just watched a video of Revelstoke (this years destination) and it looks like a hovercraft would be the perfect board.........

Hi,
I've had a Hovercraft for a few years , it is a total machine ,powder days are just sooooo much better. If you've not ridden a specialist powder board before it's hard to explain just how much better they are but every lifetime boarder should have one for those special days. It's great on groomers and you can ride it switch but that seems a bit weird as the set back for powder would be all wrong switch. Would I buy it as an all mountain board....Nope! That said so long as his other boards are serviceable after the first powder day he'll understand. Haven't tried a Flagship so can't help there
In a nut shell
GET A HOVERCRAFT you owe it to yourself!

I just got one, can't wait to ride it, but am a little nervous about how it'll fair putting it in one of the holders on the outside of cable cars. This makes me nervous at the best of times as you see your board bouncing around, but with the significantly reduced tail on the Hovercraft I'm seriously worried about whether it'll fall off halfway up! I suppose I could always put it in nose first but then I'm not sure the shape of the board will allow that. How have those of you who've got one done it? Am I worrying unnecessarily?

You're worrying unnecessarily. You can always take the board inside if you like, but lots of boards eg e fish have tiny tails.

I still haven't come across a Jones, although they look reasonable. You need to find someone who has ridden other stuff to compare really. So far this year I'm riding a landlord in powder - that's basically the same as the malolo except with a bit more nose decamber. Amusing that the reverse camber thing came and went.

My best riding buddy has a Flagship, bought it last year and totally, totally loves it. It's stiff, goes like a rocket and apparently just wants to go and go at high speed! No bad thing. It instantly improved his riding - well, to me anyway.
But it's far too stiff for the park, and really for powder or steeps. Carving? Who knows... I'd not recommend it if you've not ridden lots. The finish/top sheet quality is the best I've seen in twenty years' riding; hats off to the Nidecker factory.

@wiigman, I now ride a flagship too. As you say it just wants to go faster. Spat me off a few times to start as it is very stiff and I tried to ride it like my old board. Carving, yes it does and I no longer fear icy pistes as it is so positive on them. Parks, not a good tool there but still fun to be had on the odd jump (not that I do much). I did try to take it through a fun alley in Gerlos last year, it was rubbish, way to long for tight turns and too stiff to bend round icy berms. My mate reckons he's never seen me looking so good on the board as i do now so I reckon it's improved my riding too, mainly because I can't afford to be lazy on it or it will kick me in the teeth.

@stevomcd, Your post suggests maybe you have more experience than me as the flagship is my first stiffy so I have nothing to compare it to. Does highlight the subjective nature of all advice and comparisons.

@robapplegate, I just found it a bit one-dimensional and lifeless. Compared to e.g. my current Amplid UNW8 or previous boards like the Head ICT or Nitro Shogun which were stiff and carvy as hell, but full of pop and life at the same time.

I only rode it for a couple of hours, so would be good to have a longer shot.

Been on a Flagship 163w for a few seasons now. I like it but not the best board I have rode. Not the best carving on pistes or very steep dolomites couloirs but has saved me on a few very icey traverses following my skier friends. Could do with a touch more sidecut I suspect as likes to go very fast all the time in basically a straight line!

Just got a hovercraft split for Lofoten Adventure later in the season Cool Cool Cool
