Smear/Shmear turns, what's the deal? This type of turn seems to have been in vogue nice wide rocketed skis hit the scene.
is it just a skid turn in powder or crud. Or is there more to it than that?

@Feast, I believe it's just a bit of a skid at the top of the turn before setting the edge.
It's to slow you down a bit before the turn...particularly useful if you are skiing on "rocketed skis"

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Smearing is just skidding / travelling sideways in powder to scrub speed, or change direction, on a fat rocker-ed ski.
... Something that couldn't really be done in the "old days" of 205cm narrow straight skis.

@Haggis_Trap, does a smear bare any relation to a braquage?

^ they are both rotational, rather than carved, turns.
though usually a "smear" is a single turn in powder thrown in for a rapid change of direction.

@jbob, great example. The stivot is like a sliding or skidding hockey stop by the looks of it?
Those stivot examples look extremely skillful.

Stivot is skidding the top of the turn then carving the bottom part, smear is just skidding in powder.
