Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi All,

I'm off to Neiderau, Austria on 21st Jan, and have skied once... 14 years ago!! So I could do with any advice or tips I can get!!! I'd love to try boarding... is it easier than skiing to pick up? Also has anyone been to Neiderau, what's the night life there like??

Cheers guys, all post's will be appreciated Smile

welcome to snowHeads Hannah snowHead

In theory boarding is far easier (ie. less technical) than skiing. But, skiing is far easier than it was 14 years ago because of some incredible changes in the design of skis since then.

boarding involves a lot more falling over in the first week at least....so depends on how hardy you are.

My only tip after a 14 year break is get lessons!

happyhan, I have stayed in Oberau, which is the neigboring village and have skied in Neiderau. The resort is ideally suited to beginners and the locals are very friendly, but if you're after nightlife you're in the wrong place. This said, we and our teenage children had a wonderful time drinking in the local bars. The locals are very friendly and you should have a good time.

Boarding is fun, but I have jacked on it as I was injured too much and I don't want to ruin my skiing holidays with injuries. If you are young and tough give the boarding a try. This said Masque, is ancient and he seems to manage ok, but I don't know when he started boarding Toofy Grin

BTW the snow conditions in Neiderau are very good at the moment snowHead

Masque, Doesnt have to dig holes in the piste. Your chatting up of that nice young boarder chick at Castleford Xscape was a fairly impressive wipe out wink

As someone who started boarding at an incredibly old age (don't ask, but I won't be paying for many more prescriptions) I was advised to ski when the snow was bad, and keep boarding for the "good snow" days. It's much easier to snowboard on nice soft snow, and not so hard when you fall. It's easier to ski on soft snow too, of course, but I can already do that and even beginner skiers often fall very little. But all beginner boarders fall, because unless you "go for it" you'll never make a turn; there's no snowboarding equivalent of a snowplough turn. It's far easier when the snow is soft, even when it's too slushy to be really nice to ski on, and of course soft snow is not so painful to fall on. You could do both - many hire shops will give you a deal where you can swap from day to day. But you need lessons, either way, and that might mean opting for one or the other for the week. If you are going in a group, maybe opt for whichever you can do with at least one mate of similar ability. If you board, wear wrist guards, even if you are hard enough not to need any other body armour.

happyhan, Neiderau is a family resort, so no nightclubs as AFAIK, just Karaoke and bowling etc. The hotel we stayed in had a bar not much bigger than my living room, but it was popular with the young ski instructors and we had a good laugh drinking flugels and schnapps. Please post back on here after your holiday and let us know how you got on snowHead

happyhan, there are many who say the 1st few days of boarding will involve a lot of tumbles and pain but then you will be moving around on the mountain much earlier than a beginner skier starting at the same time. Lessons, whichever way you go. And have fun.
