Fantastic advice & all I would re-iterate is buy specific ski socks & take the time & trouble to get your boot fitted correctly, go back to the hire shop & change them, IME they have been very helpful. My wife & son have had horrendous experiences with their feet, taking the boots off on the hill, crying etc...not great
As for lessons all our kids learnt with ESF & I have to say we have no criticism to offer, laterally due to the fact we were in a group of 5 family's we hired our own instructor for the kids, it worked out cheaper & the kids could choose where they went & what they did, it was a hoot for them.
A few of the adults [4 of us] hired an ESF instructor for a private lesson one year, skied the legs off us the guy must have been in his 60's but boy could he ski, we were in a train schussing & he did a 180 degree turn, my BIL who was 1st in the line nearly wiped out in surprise, great technique & tips to practise afterwards

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Some great advice I heard about what a good fitting boot should feel like, particularly for those who haven't tried it before was
"It should be like a firm handshake. A gentle, all-enveloping pressure: but not too strong at any specific point, and certainly not crushing anywhere. A little room to wiggle the toes, but the rest held in place".
Seems about right to me.

If you have the money and or time get as many lessons as you can before you go as the more you know when you get their the quicker you can progress to parallel. I had three hours of one on one in the snow factor before my first trip to L2A and booked into three days of ski school in a group. I was doing good linked snow plough turns and after three days was doing reasonable parallel with a bit of snow plough. Four holidays later and i am addicted and can ski anything. Don't give up on the tough days cause once it comes together you will love it

Oh and enjoy taking a few breaks for a drink as you'll be knackered - you must try a hot chocolate with chantilly (whipped cream)!
I hope you have a fantastic time - you'll soon be absolutely hooked

You are not a real idiot, just a novice who recognises that status is willing to take advice, all the advice on here is good particularly and most importantly have lots and lots of fun and dont be afraid to laugh at yourself there will be a lot of laughter and maybe a few tears before you get to be really good on skis but it is so worth it.
