Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sainte Foy Tarentaise

Hi

I am considering going here in late Feb with some friends. 3 good skiers and 1 good boarder. I am attracted by reasonable price of list pass and accomodation and the positive reports on the resort however am concerned about how good a resort this place is in the absence of snow. i.e should there be no fresh snow, either in the days before we arrive, or during the week we are there, will this place be a disaster. Is going to one of the mega resorts close a better option (been to them all before so just want a change and heard good things about here).

Also considering les carroz/flaine so comparison against these would be beneficial.

Whilst we are not going to go totally mad on nightlife we would like a reasonably lively place and will consider other resort options.

Thanks

In times of snow drought, Sainte Foy often has the best piste conditions around as the resort is sheltered from the winds and the volume of skiers is much lower than elsewhere. Off-piste, the same applies - when it's all tracked or blown-out elsewhere, we usually still have some good stuff if you're prepared to hike. The pistes are also, in my opinion, a lot more interesting than in many mega-stations.

I've lived here 8 years and never really go anywhere else on my day off, still finding new stuff to do. If your idea of a good ski holiday is trundling from one end to the other of a massive area, then it's probably not the place for you. If you are into off-piste, quiet pistes and you realise that fun and variation in a day's skiing comes from within, not from doing 10 different blue runs, then there are few better places. wink

Great philosophy stevomcd! Each to their own and all that but for Mrs MA and me, it's just about being out there in the mountains and appreciating whatever we are skiing, wherever that may be and however limited the extent of slopes Very Happy.

Incidentally, Mrs MA and I (who spend a lot of time in Tignes) finally (shame on us rolling eyes ) got round to a day's skiing at Ste Foye last winter - we loved it Smile !

I skied in Sainte Foy for the first time last winter, as a day trip from Tignes. Enjoyed it so much I went back 4 more times! Each time there had been some fresh snow but the off piste had been pretty much ruined by high winds around Tignes, however the Sainte Foy it was much less wind affected so was able to ski powder.

There are some good lines to be hiked to from the top chair lift which don't seem to get a huge number of people skiing them, but obviously only do this if you know what you're doing!

It's an utterly beautiful resort. Small but perfectly formed. We loved it, went in April last year when the conditions were ridiculous (20 degrees during the day was weird!). Loved it so much, we have booked to return already. I could stare out of our apartment at the view for ever and ever and never get bored. Heaven.

I like Fruity's first sentence. So true. Right. You. Are. Fruity....., you clearly have a great head upon your shoulders...............................

Have been there about ten times over the past twenty plus years when we've been around Isere or Tignes. Today considerably built up from when I first saw it. Exceptional skiing capabilities (the forested and back skiing can be wonderful) depending upon the needs. No one is ever short changed there. No nightlife still, thank God. It's still a quiet, unassuming, simply location and I hope they keep it that way. The people are wonderful as anyone would expect.
One thing I've enjoyed is at night to walk out from our place when we stayed there by about ten minutes up the ridge and on a clear night gaze upon the region. Because it's so uncluttered with little ambient light you can easily see a few of the other villages here and there and the stars really are able to come out and do their magic. The quiet simplicity of the village as Fruity also understands does wonders.
