It varies by region. Here in BC all smoking is banned in restautants, bars, clubs etc.
I don't know what the situation is in Alberta, I suspect it is similar.

We went to La Thuile in Italy last January and were very surprised to find that the national smoking ban was being impecably observed in all the bars and restaurants we visited. Hoped it's the same in Passo Tonale this year too.

Definitely banned in Italy, signs everywhere. Apparently the penalty is a heavy fine, and if you smoke in front of young children or pregnant mothers it's doubled! (so I was told). - Good thing in my view, makes the resaurants and bars much more pleasant to be in.

The last time I was in Banff 2 years ago smoking was not banned in all bars - The rose and crown for one was definitely smoking!

Just been checking this one out and it seems that banff introduced a local smoking ban ( http://www.banffcragandcanyon.com/story.php?id=99297 ), allthough its not law for the whole of Alberta like it is in BC, i think its only a matter of time. As far as we're concerned the sooner the better.

The BC system seems quite sensible - when initially introduced it was no smoking indoors absolutely. they subsequently relaxed it to allow pubs to have their own well ventilated "death rooms" with closed door access. This avaoids forcing a significant number of customers outdoored etc but even smaller bars usually put up a tent over the terrace for smokers.

andyarmitage,
Banff introduced non-smoking regulations for bars and restaurants in late 2004. Bar owners are allowed to provide segregated and sheltered outdoor smoking areas.
The 2004 April 1st edition of the local free paper ran a spoof article about Park Rangers being armed and allowed to use lethal force to prevent infraction of the regulations.

The smoking room in international departures at Calgary Airport is like looking into a fish tank filled with blue smoke.

One of my customers has a staff canteen with a little 10 foot by 10 foot perspex box in it that serves as the smoking room, it's known by the staff as the 'p**s box' due to the yellow colour it's taken on.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Not read all the above but generally smoking is segregated and not allowed in restaurants. Hurray.

Smoking is banned in all the bars and restaurants in Banff.
The only place where I found that you can smoke inside is in Sunshine village itself. In the "Trappers Lodge" you can smoke upstairs in the bar. This is the only place where smoking is allowed inside.
