Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski boot help required

Poster: A snowHead
Hi all, I'm off for 4 months of skiing in January, with no work.
Dropped into Snow + Rock this weekend to get some boots, tried on some Salomon X Pro 130s in 28.5, but given the £360 price tag plus they recommended a footbed at another £70. Ouch. I really can't pay this much. Would i get a better deal in resort or should I hit ebay for a boot. I could always buy a new liner as there seems to be deals on zip fits or intuition liners.
Let me know your thoughts. I really am clueless on these matters. Footbeds or insoles come recommended by all, but can i get a cheaper option? Off the shelf maybe? Again let me know your thoughts. Cheers

As you are going out in Jan and for 4 months I think you would be better spending the first day or even two going round the shops in resort. Or let people here know which resort and they may recommend an excellent boot fitter there for you.

You may not get them any cheaper in resort but at least if you have any problems while out there the shop/boot fitter will be at hand to help sort any issues out.

I'm no expert but this is pretty much the advice I got when first looking for boots...

Different boots are made to fit different shape feet. A good boot fitter will asses your feet and ask questions about your ability. They'll use that to select suitable boots to try until they/you find the ones that fits best.
Only then should you consider the price and whether to go for the last seasons cheap one or glitzy new model. At the end of the day you want a good fitting boot that doesn't cripple you (physically or financially).
Find a shop here by recommendation or get them in resort (using the above as a guide) but don't just go to e-bay.

Why do you need custom footbeds?

Waste of money imo unless you need them in your normal shoes.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

When I had my boots fitted there was a line that the fitter used "don't choose boots by colour", it's something that I reckon rings true, no point looking great if you spend the morning in pain and have the afternoon back in town because your feet are crippled.
