Hi! I am looking to update my ski wear so that I can adopt a proper layering system (rather than having an insulated ski jacket that always makes me too cold or too hot!).
There are some really good one-piece ski suits on the market (like the Norrona one), which I am tempted to go for. My hesitation is that everyone on the slopes goes for a separate jacket+pants combo. Am I being a major cretin and overlooking something? Is there a major downside of having a one-piece suit over a jacket+pant combo?
All help greatly received, thanks!

@skidamstrong, serious reduction in layering and general flexibility with one piece.
Maybe, maybe, useful on a powder day, but a gimmick I'm afraid.
Unless you fall a lot.
Plus elegant tying of arms around waist at lunch. Ugh.

@skidamstrong, where do you ski mostly? One-pieces would be better for -30°c in Canada/USA otherwise I agree with @under a new name.

Cheers for the replies @under a new name and @HutToHut!
I was thinking the same re: being a faff at lunch etc.
Mainly ski in Europe, however going to Canada for 3 weeks soon, so maybe a jacket+pants combo will be the best.

@skidamstrong, Major downside of a one-piece (apart from all your mates wetting themselves with laughter) is when you want to go to the loo and do anything more than have a pee. Other major disadvantage is lack of heat control. Don't do it!

Still a big advocate for one piece. The notion they preclude/reduce flexibility in layering or are a gimmick I fully reject out of hand. Their level of comfort is the primary reason I advocate them. One can vary the level of layering no different from anything else. I admit I own several, from a pure shell, to a medium and then heavy guage insulted design, each appropriated for a given day's conditions. Again, unparalleled comfort and in heavier powder condition no snow finding its way inside between the jacket and pants. And with two way zipper, honestly, how difficult can it be to lighten one's load.........? I take it that certain individuals can't walk and chew gum at the same time.
Styles come and go. The au current jacket/pant set up witnesses pants no higher than the waist. What idiot concocted that up? Seriously. Right up there with today's powder skis that are as wide as float plane pontoons, for that matter certain all mountain skis that are simply way too wide. I guess it's time for the remake of the Burt binding, boots up to one's knees and what powder day would be complete without the beyond laughable snorkel and mask?

I find that, unless it's the middle of a storm, wearing a base layer and my No Fear ski jacket is enough to keep warm.
Don't go one piece, sorry to say that they look ridiculous.

depends what shape and size you are, where you ski, what you do for lunch...
if mechanics overalls give me a perma-wedgie, then at 6ft3, I'd need a XXXL one and a belt round the wasit to stop it looking like a cartoon animal fancy dress costume.
what do you do with the top half of a onesie at lunch in the restaurant, by the raging fireplace? at least a jacket you can take off and hang up.
some ladies versions have a zip off assflap. when you've seen french ski resort conveniences, or some Italian ones and Eastern European ones which are a pit / hole in the floor, you going to have to totally undress, cos you're not going to want to "hover"with the top half wrapped around your knees. edit: OK you'll probably be undressing too with jacket+pants, but least the jacket you can stow safely somewhere.
so, can't beat a jacket+pants/sallies imho.

Don't do it, stick with a two piece. Boy am I glad I'm not wearing a onesie reading some of the foregoing contributions!

One other disdvantage I discovered decades ago is that for some strange reason all your under layers seem to rise up leaving your midriff rather chilly.

@skidamstrong, you should only wear a onesie if you are a) very good indeed or b) a small child. Besides, have you seen how much those Norrona suits cost?
While we're at it, you should not refer to your trousers as 'sallies' or 'salos'. This just makes you sound like a bit of a t!t.

Also, when it wears out you have to replace the whole thing with jacket/pants or another onesie. I find my trousers seem to get trashed quicker than my jackets, so they can be replaced independently.
If you're getting a lot of snow in the middle, you're probably doing something wrong (or there's something you're not doing up right...), but if it's a major problem, sometimes if you buy top and bottoms from the same manufacturer they have some kind of system to fasten them together.

You know it makes sense.

I often ski in a long sleeved base layer in Spring on hot days. Tying a one piece around your waist is a bit messy. I do possess two lovely fartbags and they are great on the odd cold days, or for pootling around a resort. But they are in no way as flexible as a shell and ski pants with vent zips.

Of course they reduce flexibility, because you don't have the option to shed the top half in hot weather. Even worse if its an insulated onesie (and shell ones are jolly expensive).

And for all that it still works just fine even for newbies, it seems... especially if the top has a snow skirt, which almost everything marketed at skiers and snowboarders does. Hell, if you buy top and trousers from the same vendor, they often clip together giving all the benefits of a onesie when you need it, with none of the disadvantages when you don't.
That said, for cold days and deep days I use salopettes.
