Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

AirBnB accomodation worked out well; spacious, clean and comparitively cheap, even if it is on the 7th floor of afformentioned Castle Greyskull.

Much better to be on the inside of the ugly block looking out that in the charming alpine chalet over the road with a view dominated by Castle Greyskull, surely?

Day 3 Les Menuires

Had a good, if totally dry, evening in the Frog in Val Thorens with some excellent people. Managed to 'hide' my car to avoid the 14 euro day rate for car parking. Toofy Grin

5 hours sleep left my brain feeling like the Gobi. None the less set off before 9am. Pain au chocolat from Sherpa are eating into the budget, but they are worth every bit of 1.2 euro.

Played around off piste in the morning on the Pointe De La Masse side. Found some of the best soft cold stuff around the Masse Poma. could have lapped that for hours.

An ESF instructor struck up coversation with me regarding off piste conditions. Chatted for a while about my trip. He made the preposterous suggestion that I should make some videos on my GoPro and try and wangle a free lift pass. Appartently they do this fairly regularily. This charming chap was clearly unaware of 'All the gear, no idea' approach I take to this sport.

Lentil and ham soup for lunch back at Grey Skull. Gastronomic delight.

Swapped out the big planks for some tiny slalom skis and hung around with a few new mates this afternoon. Riding on a 60mm underfoot ski was a revelation. Edge to edge to edge in the blink of an eye. Attracted the comment from a top chap in this group of mates that 'you've skied a bit', this made my trip. Embarassed

Tuna mayo in a jacket for tea. Done. As long as BernardC posts about his luxurious suppers in Scribblings from the Tarentaise, I am going to post about my ski bum dinners. NehNeh

Last day in Les Menuires tomorrow. Sainte Foy first thing Friday morning.

Lone wolfing on the last gondola home from VT.

Might be, I'll let you know. I'll be at ISPO on the 8th, but there'll be far more girls without valentines dates in IBK than Montafon Laughing

Day 4 Part-time pisteur

First lifts over to VT to meet up with the group. As is standard with a laarge group, they were running a tad behind the pre-agreed schedule, so down into the town to loiter. Well, if I'm here, might as well go to Sherpa for my favourite breakfast carbs.

Inadvertantly took on the role of group guide, as apparently I know what I am doing. I've never been here before in my life.. Plans of lapping Roc1/2 for a bit then heading over to Monte Vallon.

Playing around en route to Roc de Marches...'Where's Dickon?'...5 minutes later, I better call him;

- You alright dude?
- I've hurt my ankle
- Can you get down to us?
- Yeah, think so.

Upon arrival said snowboarder, who is by his very nature towards the tough end of the spectrum, isn't looking to clever. Board off, conversations about blood wagon removal, where's your insurance ensued. General agreement that he'll see if he can walk, strapping his board to my bag and giving him my poles the poor chap limps downstream towards the nearest chair.

Seems like he can walk ok. As I say, he's double 'ard.

Turns out you can't download on any of the lifts in the area. Brilliant. So we take a slow amble towards the top of Reberty and sit him down. I head off to get the car, collect him, then take him back to Grey Skull of some compression, elevation and a slap up lunch.

Bire stuffed with garlic in the oven, some nice Rye style bread, bit of beaufort. Greek yoghurt, honey and baked banana for desert. All for 3 euros a head. Beat that! Very Happy

Drove him home to VT, and got back to LM by 3:30pm. Boots on for some quick laps in the sun for an hour, which was actually really awesome. Smashing some crud.

Packed my bag and loaded the car reeady for Sainte Foy tomorrow. Old, cold wholemeal pasta, red pesto and mayo for tea. Don't knock it. No, it's not Savoyarde fondue, with tart au myrtilles for afters, but fills a void.

Off to VT now tonight for some light socialisation.

Day 5 – Sainte Foy

Back into Grey Skull until 4am, following further fantastic sober partying with some wonderful new friends in Val Thorens. Getting up at 7am to roll out of Les Menuires wasn’t just tricky because of the lack of sleep. It was difficult because I really did not want to leave. I didn’t want to leave the fantastic gaggle of new mates I had made in just a few epic days in Trios Vallees.

I very nearly slacked Sainte Foy off for another day with the excellent humans. It really, really is the people that make a trip like this.

Anyway, trundled into Sainte Foy about 9:30am. Good first impressions, very quaint Alpine village, even it was only built 20 years or so ago. Café au Lait and the now obligatory pain au for breakfast. Lady in the lift pass office cannot hold a conversation for laughing about something which I don’t understand. I join in laughing anyway. Presume it was something to do with my comical mug.

Skiing was great. Off the top of the Col de L’Aigulle was nice, with a little choppy soft stuff available. The lifts are slow and the number of runs limited, but I knew this and it definitely adds to the feel of the people. Hardly anyone around.

Another delightful interaction in Sherpa, when procuring a new Opinel. The vendor referring to me exclusively as ‘chef’. Does he do this to everyone?

Accommodation for the evening was in Villette, near Aime. Again, delightful people invite me into their home with a cold beer. Then the magic. A good two hour dinner of Raclette, potatoes, charcuterie, salade and wine. Just amazing. Then strawberry cake for dessert, chased with a genepi.

Head on the pillow. Gone. Instanly.

Day 6 – La Plagne

www.samedijeski.com That’s what you’ll be needing if you’re skiing in La Plagne on a Saturday. My pass today was about 40% off. The benefits of staying with a lovely lady who works at the Tourist Office.

I’m really getting into the ski bum lifestyle now. Rocking up in the increasingly filthy Peugeot. Sliver of Beaufort for lunch. Headphones in all day. Meeting random people.

Took a wander around Villette after returning from skiing and took a few photographs. The local pensioners had been displaying their knitting skills around the village. Managed to befriend a local brace of dachshunds, they must have sense the odour of their breed upon my person.

Quiche for starter. Beef Bourguignon for main and it was fantastic. Coupled with an easy going Pinot Noir. The cheese plate which followed was extensive, all six were required to be tasted and commented upon. Just wonderful.
