Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Protecting snowboards in transit

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We now have a shiny new snowboard to transport on our ski holiday in January. It came with a free Glisshop canvas bag, which doesn't have any padding. How should we pack the board to protect it during transport? (We're flying with Monarch). Do snowboards require as little mollycoddling as skis?
Cheers,
SM.

Buy board bag, pack board plus everything else in bag. One item of luggage, padding for board, no need to post endless boring threads about baggage allowances, bargain.

Example bag here: http://eu.dakine.com/p/backpacks-and-gear/gear-bags/snowboard/tour-bag You can fit everything you need for a week's holiday in this with space left over. Wouldn't bother with wheels, excess weight for no good reason.

Go to your local DIY store and get a couple of lengths of pipe lagging - the grey stuff with the split down the side. Wrap a length around each end and secure with big rubber bands. Costs pennies and good for at least 3 or 4 trips.

@Lizzard, the trouble is, I don't really want to buy a new bag, particularly one that doesn't seem to fit with the baggage restrictions on all airlines.

Do I need to protect the bindings in some way during transport? I've really no idea about snowboard bindings. I pop some bubble wrap around the binding on skis, but I suspect that's more about making me feel better than really protecting the bindings.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Sounds good, and easy to do. Do you do anything to protect the bindings?

Take em off (makes for easier packing anyway) + wrap em in a fleece/towel. Do not forget mounting discs as I did once. Embarassed

Personally, I don't do anything to protect the bindings other than throw a fleece or something over the top for a bit of padding. Boots and clothes pack out the rest of the bag.

I need to check how much additional stuff is allowed in the bag with our ski carriage allowance. I think we can get away with some stuff but not too much.

@sugarmoma666, one point to remember - the airlines normally put a clause in saying "Snowboards/Skis ONLY!" in their small print - this is normally there to limit their liability if the bag goes missing (Jet2, looking at you...) rather than control what you put in the bag (up to the weight limit, of course).
