Poster: A snowHead
|
What with being in Tignes next week, there's a little mission I might like to execute into Italy while I'm there.
Going via the Col de Petit Saint Bernard would cut my journey time significantly.
It looks as if the Col de Petit Saint Bernard is snowless and therefore passable:

However, it is alsop declared closed:

So, those who have direct experience... just how closed is it?
Are we talking, "no guarantees it'll be passable this afternoon just because it is this morning" or are we talking "zis road is clos-ed: I will arrest if you go zer" ?

The road is closed. Unless you remove the barrier.

Closed as in....................... closed, shut, barrier down and possibly concrete blocks stopping you.
They usually put them in place on or before a fixed date regardless of conditions, some time in late november iirc.
As I learnt to my cost living in Les Carroz and needing to go to VDI, 1.5 hours drive plus cost of Tunnel to the start of col to find it closed.... so 3 hours later and many € poorer drove back past my house on my way to my meeting in Val d'isere when I thought I would actually be in the meeting!!

Dumb question. I assume Tunnel Frejus or a skidoo is the alternative when the Col is closed?

I called the guesthouse you can see in the webcam picture earlier this week. The owner confirmed the road is closed until the spring and the only access to his premises is by skidoo or on skis.

@admin, you could always skin up with a back pack and ski down the other side

yup - just walk up to the Refuge Prariond, skin up to either the Col de la Rhemes Calabre or the Col de Fons (or if you're feeling energetic the Pointe de Calabre) and you have a nice descent down to Rhemes Notre-Dame in the Aosta valley. Although given the current state of the snow you'll be doing far more walking than skiing !
