Poster: A snowHead

I recall skiing in Morzine over new year back in 1989/1990 when the only snow was a couple of runs of snow cannon generated stuff and even Avoriaz was a bit thin. Went back in March and everything was fine. The snow is rarely predictable other than it comes every winter!

@tarrantd, my word I thought I was the only person here who skied PdS that season (I worked the season).
Iirc, it wasn't as bad as you suggest over new year, but 9 weeks later without any precipitation and the whole PdS was down to about 4 pistes around Avoriaz.
No, thinking about it you're quite correct. We were only saved by a massive dumpage just in front of the vacances scolaires. Otherwise the ESF and local pig delivery companies would have been on strike. Blocking the roads to the non-existent pistes.
Pretty dire.
But this was when snowmaking was in it's infancy and the only thing that allowed any skiing at all was the very cool temps throughout.
Same conditions these days and the cannons would run 24/24 and all pistes would be immaculate.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

one year - can't remember which - there was very heavy, sudden, snowfall which caught a lot of pine trees unprepared, before they'd got properly into winter mode with drooping branches. A lot round our way just fell over, and some were impeding chairlift paths and had to be lopped by blokes with chain saws on sticks. Was that 2011? That snow didn't go away. |
Happened in Tirol October 2013 - I was stuck on a bus for an hour and a half as after it had driven up the hill a tree fell and blocked the road.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

CEM, Booger, I always kid myself that my boots have dried out and stiffened up during the summer and therefore are smaller

@under a new name, @tarrantd, I was just reading a discussion on skipass.com about the weather and people were recalling that year - practically nothing below 2000m until 18 January or thereabouts, and not a lot above. Very little open in the 3 Valleys.
I remember we were going to Kapaonik in what was still Yugoslavia, in early January, and there were reports on UK media about the poor snow in the Alps at Christmas and new year, film of people hiking in grassy meadows in Wengen, etc. I recall anxiously watching for snow reports on teletext.

Just as a follow up to this:
The snow came, and Montafon today was like Hokkaido, just steeper.
That is all /smugface

I'm insanely jealous right now, after a slow start the season is bursting into life.......I'm sitting on my hands though because things can only get better (or so the song says)......one month to the day until we hit Arlberg, the training regime has started again post Christmas, 31 hours until Dryathon begins!

No mention so far this season of the dreaded CC.
Is this how climate change might pan out for winter sports? A succession of later starting and earlier ending seasons with long spells of warmer than average temperatures preventing the establishment of a base on low to medium altitude runs ?
