Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

using goalkeeper bottoms as base layer

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
hi i'm completely new to all this, im currently learning snow boarding at my local dry slope ahead of a trip to italy in january.

i have been using some goalkeeping bottoms under my trousers due to there excellent padding in right places for falling over - a lot Smile - and wondered what were anyone's opinions on whether they would be ok as a base layer when away.

from what i can see they are made of the same material as the budget end base layer bottoms in decathlon - polyester - but have very good padding (all round the bottom down thighs and across knees) as i found put earlier in the week.

any thoughts if they would be suitable?

@id101, Welcome aboard. They might be a bit warm, but then again boarders do spend a lot of time sitting in the snow instead of sliding on it. But I ski, I expect the Rabbit or some other boarder will be along shortly to put me right. Toofy Grin snowHead

I wouldn't personally go for these, the idea of a base layer is that it traps a thin film of air between your body and the layer which warms up and keeps you warm. If these bottoms are baggy-ish this layer won't likely form and therefore they'll be colder than something that's designed for the purpose....if tight would likely be ok though. I'm not sure what you'd need padded base layer, wouldn't you be better wearing padded outers, or padded shorts? Plus, polyester - not sure, is it breathable? You don't want trapped moisture, I'd suggest a breathable merino/ or merino mix, plenty available for £15-20 on the web, eg Sportspursuit, or Aldi/ Lidl events (think I saw there was one soon somewhere, 28th?). Like the poster above I'm not a boarder and sitting about and throwing yourself down hills is probably not unlike goalkeeping so I guess you'll be ok! wink

Sounds just fine, especially as you've been using them already.

I don't generally use base layers on my legs unless it is really cold, so you might not want to layer them with super warm insulated trousers over the top.

how long are goalie bottoms? wouldn't want them rucked up above boots.

i wear base layer when it's cold and when it's warm. cold for a bit more warmth, hot (yes have skied in +8C before) to stop sweaty legs sticking to inner lining of trousers. and always 3/4 length to meet up with top of socks.

@andy, +1 for 3/4, I use Icebreaker but very rarely and only when it's -7-8c and below, I really don't like having legs too hot, side vents on lifts open!
