Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Roof-box and snow chains for a Volvo XC60

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi, driving to Val D'Isere this season and looking for a decent roof-box to carry 4 pairs of skis plus hopefully some other gear. Would also possibly get used in the summer for a few sets of golf clubs so needs to be reasonably spacious. Happy to pay for quality and not looking to skimp on cost really.

Also looking at chains, flipping expensive to get decent ones that will defo fit my car, I have to get ones that do not go onto the inside of the wheel. Have a full set of winter wheels/tyres which will be going on nearer the time. I'm assuming chains are a must have for a ski trip in January! Was wondering about socks but not sure how they perform.

Any recommendations on the above items gratefully received, thanks!

Socks work perfectly well, as good as snow-chains for most conditions. I used them on my Alfa where clearance around the suspension meant chains weren't possible.

What you want to carry in the box? Kit or skis? As depending on the answer will dictate what type of box.....

@swishtony, Yep I got my chains for my V70 from the roof box people, if you have winter tyres on your XC60 then the chances of having to use them are pretty slim!!! In 5 years of going back and forwards to the alps my old Volvo has never needed the chains, with winter tyres on she has never let me down yet, and thats been in some mega snow storms as well!! As some Snowheads will testify to!!

But officially you still need to have a set of chains in the boot in cases the police stop you Toofy Grin

On roof box's then I just went to Halfords and got the biggest one they do, it was the cheapest option by far! They quite often have half price offers running during the winter!

Thanks all,

@feef, might go for the snow-socks, are these definitely OK for French law?

@ajc2260626, 4 pairs of skis and possibly 2 golf bags in the summer, obviously if there is extra room for kit all the better but it is not a requirement.

@Hells Bells, thanks, any specific reason for that particular box?

@livetoski, yes I was thinking that as well, really more for legal reasons but if the socks are ok legally will probably go for them!
