Sean Rose, a 29-year-old winter survival officer with the RAF, was skiing at full tilt - five years ago - on a mountain near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany. He made a mistake and hit a snow bank at high speed, breaking his back.
Over a period of 8 months in hospital he underwent five operations, including the removal of a crushed vertebra and transplant of bone from his hip, held in place with a titanium rod.
Life has changed somewhat for Sean, but he has a very interesting story to tell ... which has taken him back to the mountains in a very significant way.
He also met a girl in a hot tub, which had interesting consequences.
There's a lot more in this moving and interesting article by Robert Philip on The Telegraph site.
Anyone know Sean Rose, or another spinal injury victim who's rebuilt a skiing life?

Back protectors are relatively cheap and very comfortable - I've worn one for 3 years since fracturing a shoulder blade.
Can't say they would definitely save you but orthopods credit them in a lot of motorbike accidents.

David; that's a remarkable story you found. What an incredible man Sean Rose must be (and is). I have but 1% of an inkling of the severity of his injuries having broken my T3 five years ago. I too wear a supportive brace whilst skiing.
Sean Rose-what a bloke!

Does anyone know if the disbled will be playing any part in the forthcoming winter olympics. I have huge respect for able bodied ski racers, but I am in complete, to quote my friend GWB, shock & awe over the exploits of disbaled skiers.

It is rather humbling when you see someone triumph in the face of such appalling adversity.
