Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

It made the "also interesting section" of the local news here. So far identified as a ski-tourer as back then it was the only way up the Untersberg mountain. It is the same mountain where they rescued the caver out of the deep cave (Riesending) but not the same cave. The whole mountain is riddled with caves. The mountain rescue suspect he broke through a crevasse bridge and was most likely killed instantly. Over time his skeleton has been washed deeper and deeper into the system, and it is felt that not all of the bones will ever be found.

Way more accurate and interesting than The Local which is basically a rag offering bite-size "news" for Americans in Germany/Austria, however to read this you do need to understand German.

In a cave at the Unterberg a skeleton was found about three weeks ago. This should be recovered on Tuesday by the mountain rescue workers and police. Since she had to stay for about 250 meters deep, the skeleton parts are probably brought only in the night out of the cave, said police spokeswoman Eva Wenzl.

A caver was mid-October in the cave go. This is known only recently and explored only up to about 250 meters depth, said Helmut Obermair, the chairman of the cave rescue Salzburg. In the depth he then came across parts of a human skeleton, the "earlier date" are already, in the words of Obermair. He suspects that the person has fallen a long time ago in the cave. After the body had decayed, should water seepage individual parts have further washed gradually downward, suspected of cave rescuers.

Forces should come out of the cave at night
Now the recovery has been scheduled for Tuesday. Since the early four man cave rescue and alpine police are in use. They had to descend 250 meters according to Wenzl. Thereafter, the sites were accurately measured before the skeleton parts can be salvaged. Due to the depth of the task forces will probably come back out of the cave only at night.
To whom it concerns with the dead, or, currently can not be said. "There are still some people go missing", Obermair said. "For 50, 60 years, many people are on the mountain road, as happened once always something." Reports that it is a skier, the umpire could not confirm. The skeleton is probably brought to the coroner's office after the rescue. Then the identity is to be determined.

Outreach Director Oliver Ansböck of the police was on the lower mountain, in order to get at the cave entrance with an overview of the situation. During the morning he reported on the further steps.

Shortly before noon, the remains were then flown by police helicopter "bubble" into the valley. Prior to the exact starting time was still unclear. "It also depends on the wind", Ansböck said. The strong hair dryer could cause problems for the helicopter.
Launched in the morning on Tuesday salvage a skeleton from a cave in Salzburg Unterberg is complete. The cave rescuers and mountaineers police have returned to daylight on Wednesday morning, said Helmut Obermair, chairman of the Cave Rescue Salzburg.

Skier who crashed a long time ago?
When a salvage skis, boots and parts of the strap binding were found. Details of the victim could not give the police the time being. Due to the found equipment was assumed that the victim more than 50 years - probably 80 - should be located in the cave.

Georg Zagler, the cave explorer who has found the remains, believed that the hikers fell in the hole and about 50 meters deep has crashed. There is a bottleneck, where he probably came to rest. "The cave has a slight slant top, so it has probably several times to skip it. It can be assumed that he was dead on the spot," said Zagler. In the wake of the deaths is likely to be westernized. Melt and rain water has then apparently ever cunning individual parts in depth. Bones were now down to a depth of 270-300 meters found, said the chief police officer, Manfred Schwaiger, who was involved together with Zagler and two other cave rescuers to the rescue. But certainly not all bone parts were found.

On the expert now some waiting at work: The Missing data bank in the country dates back only to 1964. Everything before that has to be read from several postal chronicles.

Researchers found skeletal
A caver was mid-October in the cave on the way, according to the known Obermair only recently and is explored only up to about 250 meters depth. Below, he then came across the human skeleton. After the body had decayed, should water seepage individual parts have further washed gradually downward, suspected of cave rescuers. The rescue took about a day because the forces had to descend about 250 meters deep.
The remains were flown from the mountain and then moved to the coroner, where now an autopsy is performed.

Oh yes, of course, and who are you?
As it happens, The Local provided the English-written route into this cave story - perfectly informative and well written (actually it's an agency report by AFP) for further exploration with the aid of Austrian media.

In what sense is The Local "a rag" ?

For some reason, when I first glanced at this story, I assumed that the skeleton was that of a woman. Can't think why. Let's hope he/she did die instantly. I wonder if they'll ever identify the remains? Sad

Interesting. Years ago I caved just east of there quite a bit, and we'd find animal skeletons in some of the the caves now and then. If they're touring across the plateaus in winter, it's all Karst, full of holes.

I've only been across that stuff in summer, where you have to pick your way carefully. There are marked paths, but the wilder areas are just hard to cross. I wouldn't have thought there'd be huge risk today if you followed a sensible protocol, but a bit like tree wells, it'd be easy to die if you got things wrong.

Powder ribbons - a joke perpetrated on beginners with too much money?

DG first skied in 1959 (Kitzbühel).
Karl K may, however, have been skiing with an earlier member (or rep) of the Ski Club of Great Britain, which was founded in 1903. An investigation into the 1929 movements of SCGB members might point to something.
Is it known whether foul play was involved here? [almost certainly not, of course, but nothing should be ruled out]

@musher, sounds like it is? Rather poignant to hear that his half siblings of that age now know for sure what happened to him after all that time. Sad but at least it's closure for them?
