Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

World's deepest railway station ... in the Swiss Alps ... is a step closer

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The revolutionary 'Porta Alpina' project, which would locate a railway station 800m below a mountaintop in the Swiss Alps, has taken a step forward

More than half the funding necessary to secure the project has been approved by the Swiss parliament and local Graubunden canton, whose tourism will benefit. The underground station would be midway through the longest rail tunnel in the world - the Gotthard 'Base Tunnel'. The lift to carry passengers to the surface would also be the world's longest (deepest shaft).

The lift shaft is already being used for construction work on the tunnel, which will not be completed until 2015.

A neighbouring valley to the station, where the ski resort of Andermatt is located, may see major expansion of its facilities.

This report and diagram from Swiss Info.

DG - you haven't mentioned if this would be an 'easy' or a 'technical' project yet?

Sherlock Chalets, I think being a railway there is a fairly good chance it will be "flatish"

It's certainly a huge bore. I'll try to get a comment from Finlay Mickel to answer your specific question.

the shaft already exists, it was built at the same time as the tunnel was started, but its a service elevator, so only needs to be made wider and prettier. Will be quite cool though, and don't see why not!

Not so impressed by the elevator shaft, as I am by the claim of "served by high-speed trains capable of reaching London in only a few hours". Wouldn't that be nice - Depart Waterloo/KingsX at 8am, be skiing by lunchtime, having boarded in London wearing ski boots! Laughing

Although I suppose in due course plane/transferbus horror stories will become train/elevator horror stories .....

I hope that it doesn't boost tourism tooo much. I've skied in Sedrun (which is near to the portaalpina) and Disentis and they're nice quiet Swiss family resorts with some interesting skiing and touring. And you can already get to them fairly easily by train from Chur or Andermatt on the furka/oberalp railway. I've noticed that as I get older progress doesn't seem to run in the right direction !!
