Any other info on finishing date? For this season?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes, it's scheduled to be finished this autumn ... though I guess that depends on the weather staying friendly. I think it's an existing run that goes over the railway at Landtunnel (but is downplayed on the piste map) ... which will be widened.

Interesting. As you come down 41 and it becomes 42, you pass the last restaurant and the piste splits into two before joining back together. I generally take the skiers left piste. The right one seems more like a track. I am guessing the new section is attached to that latter section in some way?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I had a look on the website to see if there were any details on this. Not much to be honest. However, what I did see is that they have widened the "piste" (aka single track) down from the Sunnegga area to the village. That really was much needed as the trip back down that way at the end of the day was a nightmare. I am a moderately competent intermediate who is used to coming down that way. Seeing less able skiers not used to that track trying to make it down could be painful to watch.

Yes. Early-weeks and intermediate skiers in Zermatt are best off taking the lift down from places like Sunnegga, Riffelalp, Furi etc. Home runs to the resort are best avoided at the end of the day. But nearly all the skiing above 2000m is brilliant!

@JohnMo, Care to elaborate? What was the issue? We're of for NYE so will likely be busy. Both intermediates happy on reds and will tackle the odd black in good conditions.

@frosty75, It is not a huge problem. As you come down the Sunnegga side you are on some great pistes down to Patrullarve (either red or black) through the trees. If you don’t take the chair back up and get the funicular down, the piste continues to be good for a while. Then it just narrows down to a track (i.e. the one they are widening – or have maybe finished widening). That track is really quite narrow – you would struggle to get two small cars passing each other in the summer. In winter with snow building up either side it become a sliver. The Sunnegga area is probably the easiest ski area and has the children’s ski area as well. So you have a lot of beginners. As comedy goldsmith says they really should take the funicular back down from Sunnegga. But lots don’t. So at the end of the day you end up with a very narrow section that can become pretty icy with loads of tired returning skiers, many of them not particularly strong skiers. Most people slow right down. But you inevitably get bumps and falls. Fortunately I have never seen anything bad.
If you are OK on reds and blacks you will be fine – just look out for the many people around you. It is those who are still nervous on skis I would say come down by the funicular – even if you come down to Patrullarve you can get the chair back up and ski down to the funicular. However, maybe the new widening will solve the problem.
I have realised this sounds rather negative. It is a very minor issue in the grand scheme of things. As comedy goldsmith says everything above 2000 (i.e. all the places you’ll be until you want to pack it in for the day) is heaven on earth. I’ll also be there for New Year (and indeed Xmas). Hope you have a great time.
