I'm flying with Ryanair next week and as usual will be struggling to keep my checked luggage weight below 15kg. I was wondering about taking my snow shovel on board in my hand luggage but am a little worried it might be seen as some form of weapon of mass destruction and not allowed on. Am I worrying over nothing?

Very much doubt you'd get away with a shovel in hand luggage.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Agree with Scomber - put shovel in the hold.
You *might* get away with putting it hand luggage.... ...but if they object at check-in, you're boogered.

How about in ski bag, then? Because I've just bought a new pair of skis, I will be taking them with me, even though Ryanair charge £100 (yes, one hundred pounds!) for taking them. There will be room in the bag for the shovel, but is that allowed (by Ryanair, not security)?

A few years ago, I went with Snoworks on one of their Latin American trips.
I always put my boots in my backpack and take them as carry on luggage. Flying out from Santiago at the end of the trip, I thought I would check everything into the hold, as if my boots were delayed there was no urgency for them when I got back home. I was not particularly bothered what else I had put in my backpack and put various bits and pieces in just to make things easier to carry when I got home. At the very last moment at check in, I changed my mind and I decided that I would take my backpack on board instead and did so.
We went through security at Santiago and with a flight change in Madrid my backpack was scanned for a second time. As we were flying back to Heathrow I suddenly realised to my horror, that my backpack also contained my shovel, avalanche probe and Swiss army knife.
The airline was Iberia.

That's that sorted then! It's going in the bag, along with the probe.
Thanks!

I wouldn't want to be on a flight where they allowed shovels as hand luggage

No chance of that! Put it your ski bag and it will be fine. They wont check.

I lost my shovel in grenoble for forgetting it was in my avi pouch. Oops. No point risking it.

You know it makes sense.

Think about it - if they take away disposable sewing kits, what chance has something designed to cut through ice got????

OK, so I'm not going to try to take my shovel on in my hand luggage. How about the Samurai sword I always take on holiday with me, though. Surely that will be OK?

Actually, the axe, shovel etc is part of ski mountaineering kit so counts as your sporting equipment. Even if they look in your ski bag it will be fine, it's essentially the same as ski poles.
