Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

I've just tried on my ski boot for the first time since the accident and it felt fine. Hurrah!

The guys at Inside Out are running a 'Return to skiing after injury' clinic next month that I'm going to go to. Really looking forward to it.

I have also been working hard to convert one of my friends into a snowhead and get her to come on the EosB! Twisted Evil

And I'm back!

On Thursday I went to Hemel for a morning with Lisa from Inside Out for 'Back to Skiing After Injury' Clinic. Lisa is a physio as well as a ski instructor. Scott was also there, taking photos and observing. I was the only person there for that session, but the idea is that there can be up to four people in a group. We started with some questions about my injury and my recovery and a look at the x-rays. We did some balance and flexibility exercises upstairs in the cafe and talked about what I was hoping to achieve. She was a little bit nervous about the extent of my injury, but was reassured that I have been doing exercise including weightlifting. When she was happy that I understood the risks, we went out onto the snow.

The first thing I discovered was something rather irritating. My Kneissl Redstars had been left 'in a safe place' at Hemel when I got broken and were picked up a while after the accident. I had thought at the time there were a few more scratches on them than I expected. When I came to put them on I found that the bindings were on a completely different setting! Someone had clearly been using them. That's not fair Crying or Very sad

Once we'd got the skis setup properly, I clicked in and went straight up to the top - might as well be brave, eh? The first run down was scary and I did have a bit of a fall. It was strange how every bad habit I'd worked through came right back at me. But, after a few runs, and a few drills I was skiing really nicely. Before long I was having fun again! Lisa was very clear about what I should and shouldn't be doing at this stage of my recovery, and also when I could start thinking about upping my performance in the future. For example, we agreed that I should avoid much angulation for the next six months or so, but it's fine to concentrate on rotational separation, and to work on perfecting the central theme stuff.

In the course of a morning I went from wobbly and scared, to really decent rotational parallel skiing. I now feel ready to ski on the EoSB and am sure that by next winter I'll be properly back in training.

This is the course Inside Out are running:

Maireadoconnor, Great stuff, really pleased for you.
I'm off to Les Arcs, first time skiing since breaking my T&F two years ago (other things have happened since though).
I've done a couple of sessions at Hemel recently, the last, a full day with Scott of Inside Out was simply great, as said elsewhere here, "worth every penny"!

Seeing those x rays though made me feel better.

My 11 year old fell in Bormio at half term. She had done hers races in the English champs, and it was free skiing afterwards. She broke her leg at the tibia plateau and is really annoyed that she cant ski or do sport for at least three months. Break did not look like those x rays though!

A vote for snowcard insurance and how they handled things by the way. I even was allowed to claim back some of my lift pass (two days) as I could not ski while looking after her.

@Maireadoconnor, that's terrific - a fitting reward for the work you've been putting in. snowHead

@c44rver, how about, if you're squeamish, you don't read threads about injuries. They're not compulsory. Some of us enjoy injury porn. wink

And, more positively, it's fantastic to read about how people have managed to recover from those injuries.

It's @allanm's fault, not mine! My x-rays are positively benign compared to his!

Sorry @c44rver, you're always going to be outvoted by the snowheads rubbernecking contingent who just love a gory photo! Be careful around this subforum because there are some REALLY grim ones! Skullie Was it Kitenski who did his femur a few years back? <shudder>

I did a BASP first aid course last weekend. That had some amazing photos, including what happens when your wife hits you over the head with a cast iron frying pan. Molly the instructor asked us what we learned. "Yes, that's right," she said. "Don't buy your significant other a cast iron frying pan."

How about when your wife (well we were not married at that point) throws a ski at you at the bottom of the run and shouts "why the f**k did you take me down that!". I ducked and the ski missed my head. We have been married for nearly 18 years now....

I'm back from the EoSB now - thanks Jonathan and T-bar; didn't see your messages until just now. Happily, I do still have a foot also.

I had an incredible week in Val Thorens and am astonished at how well I managed. I had intended to 'take it easy' but I found that I was handling everything short of seriously steep, mogulled or variable terrain. My fitness isn't quite 100% - my strength is still good in long turns, but I'm not as nimble as usual in shorts and bumps. I had a bit of knee pain, and a stiff ankle at the end of the day. I think that's because my ligaments aren't quite as springy as normal, so stretching them for hours at a time caused them to be a bit sore. Nothing that an ice pack and a couple of ibuprofen didn't fix tho. On the whole, I’m delighted.

Maireadoconnor, your x-ray just reminded of one of my favorite skier, Jens Byggmark (pretty young, and he's Swedish, linked his bio in case you're not familiar), who had to stop skiing momentarily due to his own fracture. Actually met him once or twice with his leg cast, and I'm glad to see you in recovery stage.
