Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Year-Long Travel Insurance with Winter Sports Cover

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can chip in with some advice for travel insurance.

I am going travelling for a year and I will be spending a ski season in Big White in Canada. I need travel insurance for the entire year, but, when I add winter sports cover, it adds it for the entire 12 months. I only need winter sports cover for 5 out of the 12 months.

I am speaking to a few brokers, but I wondered if anyone had this issue before?

I tried to find just winter sports insurance, thinking that I could get year-long travel insurance and then add 5 months of winter sports cover on top. However, the only winter sports cover I can find includes travel insurance, which would mean I would be paying for two lots of travel insurance cover.

Any help would be appreciated Smile

Thanks, Ian

Dogtag allow you to specify how many days of winter sports you are doing. Not the cheapest though.

Thanks flaming. You're right, they're not the cheapest, but I guess you get what you pay for!

A standard TI policy with winter sports cover would only cover a set number of days anyway. I presume you want to cover off piste without a guide also and again many standard policies will not cover that. Snowcard is another specialist to check out.

Thanks Layne. I'm having to look for long stay or gap year policies to cover that amount of time.

I've just found one called Top Dog Insurance (www.topdoginsurance.co.uk), which lets you specify how long you need winter sports cover for. It works out at just under £400 for their medium (Gold) package.
It includes on and off-piste in recognised and authorised areas. Big White boasts that it is almost entirely skiable, but I don't know what the limitations would be on which off-piste parts are "recognised and authorised".

I've never heard of topdog but they seem OK:

What off piste is covered by any insurance policy is a minefield frankly and much discussed on here.

Looks like the policy wording talks about resort boundaries. So long as you're skiing within the resort boundary and not in any areas that they've closed off, you'd be fine. No venturing further afield though.

MPI Brokers are good. They covered me for the year including 3 months skiing (in Europe). Ring them if you can't get an online quote.

If Serriadh is right, then I'll just be limited to the 2,765 acres of skiable terrain. What a shame! Smile

Thanks Claude B and Pedantica, I've contacted MPI and they sent a quote through. Their comparable offer to the Topdog quote I posted above comes out at about twice the price (£777.68 ). I'm sure there are marked differences in the small print, but the main stuff is comparable and that's quite a leap.

thebronsonite, Shocked Their price for me was very good (about £150) covering all the off piste etc that I needed. That is a lot.

Claude B, that includes 12 months travel and 5 months winter sports. What were you getting cover for?
They had a cheaper option, but it was very, very basic.

 You know it makes sense.

thebronsonite, It was £161. Annual Single Europe inc trips up to 60 days inc 60 days skiing per trip (I did 9 weeks in total, 3 weeks and 6 weeks). Good cover inc off piste without guide, etc. I suspect the sharp increase is because it's Nth America and 5 months uninterrupted skiing.

I imagine you're right, Claude B, but it seems like quite an increase even for that.
I'll email them back and see what they say, although I very much doubt they can drop it too much, if at all.

I would also imagine that the North America bit would increase the cost. We use MPI and we are able to exclude things that we do not normally need to have covered. Worth a phone call to discuss it.

Thanks everyone. I got a response from MPI, who said their winter sports cover is of a very high standard. The only reduction would be if I bought a summer package, then a separate winter sports package, but it doesn't reduce it much.

The difference in the policies is quite large from what I can see. The Top Dog Gold package beats the MPI Standard package on 24 out of the 45 sections in terms of amounts covered (E.g. Top Dog £10m emergency medical expenses v MPI £5m), they draw on 7 sections and MPI "wins" in 14 sections. In reality though, there is little difference in most of the sections MPI wins on, such as up to an extra £50 for piste closure (if anyone wants it, I have a full list comparing the two - PM me). The biggest thing MPI wins on is £5m personal liability vs £2m for Top Dog.

My guess is that MPI provide a much better level of service and probably cover a lot more smaller things to make claiming a lot less stressful. However, with my very limited knowledge of insurance policies, my gut feel is that it isn't worth paying twice the price.

I am far from an expert in insurance though, so this is just my opinion and please do your own research! I'm just posting this up to help anyone else who may be looking into this sort of thing Smile
