Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Christmas skiing

Despite skiing in the Alps for many years I've never actually been in a resort over Christmas itself. I apologise then if this is a stupid question but am planning a family week skiing from 20th to 27th December and just wondered if the lifts, piste and restaurants and facilities on slopes are all open on every day over this period, or does it differ between countries.

As far as I know all Alpine resorts tend to declare their opening day no later than the Saturday before Christmas. Everything they can open will be open. That's not to say that thin snow cover may prevent certain lifts or pistes opening, but all businesses restaurants etc will be.

What Perty, said and most of the resort shops and restaurants are open as normal on Christmas Day.

814man, In the alpine countries the locals have their traditional family Xmas meal on Xmas Eve, so you often find that shops close early (about lunchtime) on Xmas Eve. Xmas Day is a normal day as regards shops and restaurants etc (and of course the ski slopes are open as usual both Xmas Eve and Xmas Day).
If you're looking to experience Xmas in an alpine village I would recommend one of the Austrian resorts such as Zell am See, which has a Xmas market with stalls etc in the main square and on Xmas Eve at night the local brass band and choir play music from a balcony overlooking the square. Also the lakeside setting is very pretty.

In Mayrhofen it is exactly as Alastair Pink, says. You wont notice any real breaks in service, apart from the supermarkets shutting a bit earlier. All the restaurants and bars will be open as will mountain huts etc. This is peak time for the tourist trade and so although they still respect their traditions, they also want to make sure that their guests are happy and well cared for.

In Austria you will fine a Christmas Market almost everywhere these days....some are very famous as Alastair Pink said...e.g. Z.A.See, or maybe Kitzbühel etc.
However its more possible that everything will be overcrowded...and not that you will find something closed....(except supermarkets etc)

Some huts will close at 12ish on the 24th but will be open as usual on the 25th and through the rest of the week.
Supermarkets and shops will be closed on the 24th from 12 and on the 25th.
Hope this helps!

We've spent seven Christmases in Livigno, Italy and I can't think of any difference between Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the other days of the week. It all rolls seamlessly on. snowHead

On the same note if looking for a Christmas meal in a French resort, would Christmas day or Christmas eve be a better choice ?

Would restaurants have special menus on these days and booking required ?

Christmas Eve is the big Celebration in France and we have always booked. Christmas day has not been so busy, nor with special menus, but we still booked.

We spent last Christmas in Lofer Austria about 30 minutes from Salzburg Airport. We were SElf Catering and did find the Suupermarkets in the area didn't reopen until the 28th.

We skied Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, everywhere did close early Christmas Eve. We went to Christmas Market in Salzburg, tbh, wasn't over impressed with it. Been there, done that.

In Les Arcs the shops, lifts, ski schools operate perfectly normally over Christmas. The only differences are the restaurants have special (ie expensive) menus for Christmas eve, and they do torch light descents, free vin chaud, piped christmas music and Christmas mass in the church . Every thing returns to normal for Christmas day. Much, much nicer than the UK.
