has anyone any ideas where i can find some self catered appts / chalets in italy over new year & 1st week of jan? ideally in the dolomites.... am struggling at the mo...

You can normally find some via booking.com
But specifically for example you could try this for example which is the residence owned by the same family that run the hotels in Arabba that snowHeads use for the birthday bashes.
We stayed (not planned) in one of these last year for a night when we could not make it to Arabba due to the excess snow 
Although the particular location is not much good if you want a village and nightlife.
But a search for this sort of thing may generate more possibilities.

That is the busiest week of the season in Italian ski resorts and you'll will pay top whack to stand in queues. Whereas Feb half-term is cheaper & much quieter

BenTisdall, cheers for the beds up - we can only go new year I'm afraid but i guess we could swap it the other way round as we want to do one week in france and one week in italy, so we could do new year in france and first week of 2015 in italy... would this avoid this busy italy holiday?
also we have to find self catering as we take the dog and hotels arent big on allowing hounds...

ajc2260626, good accommodation in France tends to be booked up far in advance for New Year - don't delay if you find something suitable.

yep am on the hunt, might have a look at austria and as that would be on the way if we went to the dolomites....
