Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I thought @abc might appreciate this

Seriously though, this is a fact any microbiologist has known and espoused since the outbreak began and also goes to how Ebola can be fomite spread. Note droplet spread is different to aerosol spread (which ebola does not spread by) as the drop must land on you and then you fail to wash/ disinfect before it contacts a mucosal surface(mouth nose eye). This is why hand washing so important

CDC now downplaying though not denying droplet infection.

In essence it is possible for Ebola to transmit by respiratory droplets but NOT by aerosol. It is hard to convey this without causing paranoia due to people not understanding the difference. Plus in the grand scheme it is likely very few cases of ebola are spread this way.

Personally I feel they're being a little economic with truth to minimise paranoia. Maybe this works out to greater good. It is not good when medical staff at bellevue hospital are ostracised. Regarding nurse in maineband court mandated quarantine: I really don't know what to make of her or state.

As if the Ebola outbreak in West Africa weren't bad enough, it now seems that the World Health Organisation are concerned about an outbreak of bubonic plague in Mozambique on the East African coast. WHO are particularly concerned about Antananarivo, the capital and largest city in Madagascar. Quote "There is now a risk of a rapid spread of the disease due to the city’s high population density and the weakness of the healthcare system. The situation is further complicated by the high level of resistance to deltamethrin (an insecticide used to control fleas) that has been observed in the country."

Already 40 people have died (with 119 infected) and 2 percent of the cases are the much more contagious pneumonic form which is transmissible from person to person through infected droplets spread by coughing (and which was responsible the the Black Death in medieval times). Skullie

@Alastair Pink, however, it is bacterial, readily treated with antipiotics and thusly nothing like a problem to us, safe in our developed world cocoons.

Until the bacterial mutate into a drug resistant variant, that is!

Even Ebola is much more survivable in the developed world. So far, pretty much all the patients infected in the western world recovered.

All it took was better resources in the local treatment centers (and more of such treatment centers, of course). Sadly, the majority of western population still think we can let the Africans die as if that's none of our business. The "cocoons" is largely in the brain. Sad

Apparently the big mistake everyone has been making is relying on evidence-based medicine and science to try and deal with ebola. All we really need is magic water and sugar pills!

She is a health worker and there is only one contact to trace. She did the right thing when symptoms developed. The contact person won't become infectious for at least 7 days and can be quarantined as a precaution.

I live one mile away and I'm not worried.

@glasgowcyclops, Its good shes done the right thing, but what worries me is the people shes met in transit, on the plane etc etc. I know the spread is very unlikely thankfully, but she I would hope has been very careful whilst abroad, yet contracted it. Now she has been in contact with others who are not so careful and do not know the symptoms - some are like a cold which most of us have at this time of year.
