Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Worst Summer weather for a while in the French Alps ?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've been out here in Serre now for a month and can pretty well count on one hand how many dry days we've had.

We had warmer weather (sitting out on the patio) in March and April when temps were well above 25 every afternoon in the sun. Have not even got the sun loungers out of the garage this summer Sad

You usually expect some wet weather in the Summer with storm clouds bubbling up during the day but for the past week or more we've hardly seen the sun and the cloud has hung around the Mountains at circa 2400m - Galibier has been in cloud all week!

Last week whilst hiking we were caught in a fair snow storm, and the next day you could see a very distinctive snow line at around 2400.

And it is cold as well Sad

Last week was the first week of the resort really opening up for Summer and it was certainly not the best of weather if you were only out for one week!

Many here (locals etc) are saying it is the worst summer for a long while, evidently it is also bad in the South.

And it's not just here in the Hautes Alpes, my daughter is working in Tignes and there it's even worse as they are at 2,200 and again people are saying it's the worst Summer that they can recall - the glacier was closed most of last week.

And made all the more ironic by good weather back in the UK rolling eyes

Anybody out in any other Alpine region concur / disagree ?

I'm out till end of July, so what's the betting weather will get better here and go downhill in the UK ?

Actually being a tad optimistic, forecast (for what it's worth) does look a little better for the coming week.

Yes it is raining in the alps at the moment - but untill the end of september you can't call anything - yes we've had a week of rain without much sun, but that isn't unseasonal, or even uncomon. sorry you just got unlucky.

Forecast from Monday looks like back to normal. Before last week it was pretty as usual. Chatting to a guide friend last night he said it was like deepest winter above 3,000m.

This has been a bit of a miserable week weather-wise (actually I would say it's the worst July week weather-wise I've experienced in 5 summers here) but other than that the summer has been pretty good. All forecasts seem to indicate a return to sunny and warm weather from tomorrow or the day after and - as Idris points out - it's only the 13th of July! There are still months of summer remaining. Part of the problem for you seems to be that the UK has apparently had some very nice weather recently… perhaps that is skewing your perception a bit? Or perhaps the weather really has been awful in Serre for a whole month…

My perception is that of being out here for a month already and comparing that to previous summers (this is the fourth), as well as listening to the locals who run businesses, and yes they always moan, if it's not the weather it's the World Cup, or lack of TDF stages in this region compared to previous years (although it goes past us on the 19th) about the lack of people and how it must be the weather etc

I've been riding most days (getting out in the morning and back before 14:30 when the chance of showers are far more) and had ten mates out for four days when we had one day of atrocious weather, but on the whole they were lucky, trouble is they had to ride every day where was I can be a little more choosy if weather looks suspicious as on a road bike descents in the wet are not up there with descents in powder !

Last week was very bad, and that came after a week of below average weather so it all merges into people saying it's been a bad summer - I wasn't here in May and first couple of weeks of June but people say there was only one good week and on the whole was very wet.

That said we don't let the weather stop us doing stuff and managed two big ski tour recce hikes last week (one in snow) and on Friday I did 147km / 3600m vertical ride, though riding with a back pack carrying two jackets, light waterproof over trousers and winter gloves / hat etc

Then I speak to my daughter most days who is in Tignes and she too has had similar discussions about the summer so far there.

So this thread is not just about my perceptions and how I've been unlucky to have one bad week.

Anyway glad I have my Paramo gear when hiking Cool

This was at La Gardiole 2753 above the Col de Granon 2404 just after the snow storm on the way up

We went out to Les Gets on the 23rd June and had friends staying for the first six days and it was lovely and sunny, just T shirts and hats when walking and then the following week, 30th onwards it was ok, bit duller at times so we were a bit careful about when we were out and also not getting stuck up somewhere when the lifts close and we had some rather good thunder storms later afternoon that week. And it was not really till the evening of 6th July that it fell apart a bit, fine all that day and then the rain started and it didn't really stop until we were leaving on the 10th, and believe it has carried on since then. It was only 4C that morning when we left at 9 a.m. But we didn't light a fire or put any heating on at all. Certainly I was glad I was in my own chalet, not using up valuable holiday leave and with plenty of things to get on with. We have now got guests staying for then next five weeks or so - fingers crossed it bucks up for them.
We have certainly experienced wet and cold weather in the summer in the past, but it can change from day to day very quickly.

Fairly typical summer here. We've just had a pretty long cooler/rainy period (with patches of hot sun for a few hours thrown in), but before that we had a long hot dry period, and probably will again soon. Normal mountain weather, really. Last night was the Wetterleuchten festival (big electro rave up on Nordkette) and it was warm with a little rain. Last year was v cold but clear; the previous five it snowed!

The one thing that we haven't had so much of is the normal pattern of hot days with an hour of rain at around 5pm.

yes, here too. Yesterday was the real wash out day so, while I've noticed how much easier I find hiking/cycling in the cool and damp weather than the heat, I wimped out and treated myself to an entire day curled up on the sofa with a good book (When Snow Falls on Cedars as recommended by Samerberg Sue on here ages back and it's taken me until now to get round to reading… great recommendation Sue). However, it's been dry today, there's a patch of blue sky overhead, and I can see and hear from my window how much water is rushing through the waterfall at the moment thanks to the rain of the last week, so I'm off out to enjoy it - every cloud and all that Very Happy

miranda, Glad you got round to it eventually! I've read all David Guterson's published books and that one is still my favourite.

Weatherwise here in the Chiemgau it is pretty well a standard summer - sometimes warm, sometimes wet sometimes both! Having lived here for quite a while (nearly 20 years now) can't say I've noticed much change à la Weathercam's observations. Perhaps those of us not restricted to a week or two here and then are not so sensitive to variations as they are perfectly normal in mountainous areas. wink

Samerberg Sue, I've spent a couple of weeks (not fortunate to spend any longer quite yet ) in Monetier-les-Bains every summer for the past 8 years. We've had sun, rain, hail and yes, snow on the peaks. It is unusual to get two weeks of warm unbroken sunshine, but not unheard of. I wouldn't dream of not having warm clothing with me, and I suspect many of the visitors are just as well prepared. We are at 1500m in the mountains, so yes, anything can happen. I've sat in beautiful warm sunshine in November then woke the following morning to 10cm of snow on the garden. Perhaps this is the first summer that Weathercam has been able to stay out for longer than a week or two. Weathercam, when there are two or three TDF stages they moan about being shut in.

Yes, I learnt my lesson big time the first summer I spent in the Alps. I had to go to for work and, at that stage, the mountains for me were all about the skiing and definitely NOT about the summer (and to be honest Gstaad can be a pretty boring place for a big city-dwelling twenty something). So I'd put no effort into researching what it was like in the mountains in the summer due to my lack of enthusiasm and paid the price… literally. First 3 weeks (late July into August I think) were 30+ degrees every day and I'd just packed for a bog standard, middle of the road British summer. So inevitably had to go and buy a lot of overpriced summer clothing that I didn't really like in Gstaad. Then, of course, the temperatures plummeted and there was snow on top of the hills… so I had to go and buy a lot of overpriced winter clothing that I didn't really like. rolling eyes It worked out ok as I just left all those clothes in Gstaad as I had to go back there winter and summer for the next few years, so didn't get caught out again.

I really love summer in the Alps now (as much as I love the winter Shocked). Of particular benefit for an - ahem - delicate 'English Rose' like me is that, no matter how hot it gets in the daytime, the temperature always drops at night and there are no mosquitos, so you can sleep with the window open if you need/want to. Plus there's just so much to do. I'm probably going to visit a friend in Gstaad for two days in August… I wonder if I'll view the place with new eyes now I love summer in the Alps so much.

davidof, we were in Serre Che with my parents three years ago. Weather was OK, but not wonderful, we didn't use the pool that much (although hubby went every morning to escape the in-laws) and had a couple of days of torrential rain and even snow. It was the year the Tour stage was heading up to finish at the top of Galibier and there was snow there a couple of days before. An Australian staying in another apartment had to be rescued from the Izoard and the annual sky race was almost cancelled.

that mirrors my experience of a good many summer weeks in the northern French Alps every year since 2003. I also echo miranda's enjoyment of cool nights and no bitey things. I've just come back from 5 days in Cornwall and my legs are covered in itchy bites, some mozzies, some horseflies.

I spent 7 - 17 June in the alps and had glorious weather, practically throughout. It's the luck of the draw.

But yes, this is a fantastic summer so far in the south of the UK. snowHead

It's waiting till we get there mid-August for the sun to come out Little Angel A few years ago, the weather was so cold & horrible we had to raid the cave for our ski thermals. Then we headed South to visit the daughter in Montpellier when we could no longer put up with the rain. It's the mountains - weather varies, but I suspect our expectation for decent holiday weather clouds our common sense sometimes wink

Pedantica, c'mon thought you'd be more aware of weather / sport etc - if conditions are crap then it has a tendency to affect what you're trying to achieve, and that's not just racing up a mountain but can be a family (like what I saw) today trying to go for a randonnee - I know I'm out on a limb on this one as most will not understand rolling eyes
