Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

TJ Baldwin Retires from Racing?

 Poster: A snowHead

read on BSS FaceBook page that TJ has retired.... Sad day for British racing when yet another promising racer in their prime has to call it quits... Anyone have any information? The press release said nothing really...

Doesn't surprise me - if the BOC won't give him a start after years of effort what's the point in another 4 year cycle to be let down by blazer wearers?

He has definitley decided to retire.
A whole host of reasons rolled into one has made his mind up. Tooo many to list here.
He said to me about 5 years ago that he would know when the time was right to retire and this is sadly it.
All of the above reasons given by others are part of it.
iskar, 50/50 I think.
There might only be 1 male Senior member of the BSS Alpine team for 2014/2015 (Dave Ryding SL) Who knows?

Perhaps the future of alpine skiing is in the other events. The new events are the ones that are attracting people's attention. That is where British skiing should be spending the money.

Stephen59, it is not an "either-or" equation. Ski-racing creates a technical foundation for other disciplines, such as moguls, skiercross and big mountain. Race clubs provide a general feeder system into the sport; to give a well-known example, Pat Sharples started as a ski-racer with Lions Ski Club in Yorkshire. So a healthy race culture is vital for the overall success of British skiing.

On a related matter:
Malcolm Erskine is running for a position on the board of British Ski and Snowboard.
Malcolm competed at a high level (Europa Cup, with a couple of World Cups thrown in); he has coached full-time, and has run a ski academy, for the past 18 years, for very little personal gain or glory.

This is sad news indeed...

Can't say I blame him though: imagine how hard it must be with a total lack of support for any Speed programmes from BSS, the money worries all the time, fighting against the bigger nations using inferior equipment, having the love for the sport knocked out of you, not going to the Olympics, not wanting to risk life and limb in DH to get results knowing that there would be no help if the worst were to happen, etc etc etc.

I would vote for Malcolm.

[EDIT] I should have a vote under the BSS constitution but Scotland hasn't agreed to it so I don't know how board members will get selected.

Only BSS members are eligible to vote.
You can become a member at

however it costs £100 - but only £20 for ex-FIS-licence-holders.

The bigger the base of kids taking part in any sport will produce a higher peak. We have for too long have had a very narrow pathway to the top. Get the kids in,find the real talent and then specialise later on. Slope style is going to increase the number of kids coming to the sport. Spend the limited funds in that area, which can initially be UK based .

Does anyone have any positive/negative comments on either candidate before I cast my vote?

this , I suspect, wasn't purely about finances. TJ didn't get any I don't think. But he deserved support; by that I mean being sent to world championships when he qualified at no expense to BSS, being sent to the Olympics when he qualified etc.

Isn't Bartelski the incumbent?

If so, I guess, if you think things have been going as they should, he's the one to vote for.
Erskine has set out his manifesto pretty clearly in the letter that Martin Bell linked to.

Actually, here's a transcript.
Malxolm Erskine wrote:
10 May 2014
From M. Erskine, standing for chair of the BSS Alpine, Speed & Telemark committee (AS&T)
Nominated by M. Telling, director of Ambition Ski Racing

To British Alpine racers and supporters of British ski racing

It is time to replace those responsible for the mishandling of ski racing’s interests. The sport needs people willing and able to fight its corner. Have your say in the May elections.

The governing body (BSS) sent only two racers to Schladming for the 2013 Alpine World champs, an event where the potential share of TV rights by participation would have made a huge difference to our Alpine programs, the downhill teams having already self-funded since the end of the previous season. For the younger racers who missed out, notably Jack Gower ranked 2nd in the world for his age in GS behind Henrik Kristoffersen, it should be remembered that the GB qualifying standard for U21 was higher than that of any other nation. Now, in 2014, the British snowsport nominations for the Sochi Olympic Games have proven once and for all that those in charge of the GB teams are either anti-Alpine or incompetent.

Age 26 at the time of the Olympic downhill, Dougie Crawford had achieved a top thirty start profile with a chance of drawing a bib from one to seven. TJ Baldwin, age just 23, looked forward to wearing bib thirty-three in the downhill and top forty bibs in two other disciplines. If nominated by the BSS. Instead they both had to watch television coverage of their peers achieving sponsorship-securing, in many cases career-defining results. The governing body’s failure to fund our men’s downhillers in recent years was a shame. The decision to obstruct their participation at Sochi was despicable. Likewise the outstanding young adults who should have been blooded for future events. Likewise the GB team for Skier X. All appeals against their non-selection were dismissed by the Alpine chairman and his panel or the performance director for BSS who then wrote an email to TJ Baldwin’s father demonstrating his ignorance and contempt for FIS Alpine ski racing.*

Together with Marc Telling, I held a public meeting at the English Alpine champs mid-February in Bormio to air our concerns. At the end of the meeting I called a vote of no confidence in the BSS performance director and the chair of the AS&T. From a room of nearly one hundred attendees, including many of British racing’s big hitters, no one voted against. The ski racing hierarchy in Britain rarely accepts failure or votes of no confidence as good reason to resign, and sure enough neither blameworthy individual has resigned his post. Since they cannot be shamed into resigning, they have to be voted out.

Governing bodies have to be held to account to earn the trust of the sport at large. That way everyone involved – clubs, schools, academies, officials, coaches, volunteers and racers – we can all strive for a common goal, the good of the sport. And that means encouraging the sport at every level. Ski racing and ski races should be fun. Selections should be fair and based on results. There are people on the sidelines who, given a new regime, could help promote and oversee coherent development for ski racing and its crossover disciplines. Help me raise the bar for performers and administrators alike. Let’s raise sponsorships and scholarships and, above all, support our elite athletes. To register and vote: http://www.teambss.org.uk/about-us/join-us

Malcolm Erskine

Former trainee, Kandahar, Sandown Park and Scottish Ski Club. Ex England and British ski teams.
Founder and director, British Ski Academy. Organiser: British Interschools, Anglo-Scottish Cup.
Former athletes’ director, British Ski Federation; former Alpine racing committee chair, English Ski Council.

* Just this weekend, in a sad postscript to the fiasco, TJ Baldwin retired from Alpine ski racing.

There is only 1 person to vote for. Malcolm Erskine. He has the sport at heart. He has the athletes interests at heart. He wants GB Alpine skiers to compete on the world stage. He knows what he is talking about! Most of the GB team have been through the BSA at some time in their career.
Look at what has happened under Mr Bartelskis reign. He got Paddy Mortimer in as Performance director. One of his mates no less. He has tried to destroy Alpine skiing by only supporting Tech not all disciplines as the BSS constitution stated. Anyone who was at the Meribel meeting in Apr 2013 would understand why every one in Alpine wants him out. His attutude to the top athletes just stunk! Total contempt. No one has even nominated him as yet. They were queueing up to nominate Malcolm.
It's too late to make any difference for TJ, but at least others could benefit from a change in regime.
Please vote for Malcolm Erskine.
