Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Line Opus Skis For Japan - Alternatives??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi Snowheads!

Ive just finished my first season working/skiing in Canada and Im planning on spending the next in Japan. Im looking to get my skis sorted for next season and so far, the Line Opus in 178cm seems to be pretty much what Im after but I was just wondering if there would be any suggestions on similar skis to check out?

Im about 5'10, 60-65kg and like to ski powder and trees hard, fast and with a fair amount of airtime if possible. Last season I had some Icelantic Nomads (181 long, 105 waist) which I loved and Im looking for something similar but a little shorter so they're easier in the trees and for spins etc, a bit wider so they're better in the deeper stuff (which I hope to encounter a fair bit of in Japan) and not going to be terrible on the groomers or in crud.

I used Marker Griffon 13 bindings on my Nomads and I was wondering if they could be used/recommended on the Opus' (which have a 118 waist) if I got the wider (130) brake for the Griffons?

Thanks in advance for your help, Mike

Have a look at this thread:

http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=110608

Nobody (except me, blink and you'll miss it) was skiing anything wider than 105.

The opinion was very much in favour of a mid-width as you really want to be IN rather than ON the Japanese powder.
It is so light that it allows so much more fun to ski in it.

My skis were almost too fat, I had nothing like the number of face shots, I just could not get as deep, even though the powder was deeeeep!

Everybody skiing (except me) was a professional ski instructor...even those falling over!

I think around 120 underfoot at fully rocketed. Much of the terrain isn't that steep, so if you want to have fun, ski fast and get the surf on, fatter is better. I took two pairs, 118mm Bibby Pros and 135mm underfoot Down CD1s, and had the most fun on the fatter (though if you're staying in one place, specifically Niseko, you do need something that handles crud and tracked pow well). A guy who I skied with over there was having a poo-poo-tonne of fun on Praxis Powder Boards; there's not many places in the world you could travel too with with such a specialised ski as you're only option! The snow is so light you'll be in it anyway on the good days. If you want a face shot, just slash harder...

I think the 186 4FRNT Renegade would probably be my pick for a one ski Japanese quiver.

Nice video rungsp. I can understand the theory behind using skinnier skis but I feel that for jumps/tricks in the powder and for going fast, it will be better to have the wider skis so I stay higher in the snow - especially if it really dumps it down...

Clarky, are 4FRNT available in the UK? I tried finding them in the UK before and haven't had much success...

Cheers, Mike

KenMan, I don't know about the UK, there are several places in Austria and Germany which stock them though (and are on sale atm): http://www.yellowsportshop.com/gui/shop/index.asp?topId=13&mainId=227&subId=0&productId=679&paging=1 and http://www.blacksheepsports.de/Ski/Freeride-Ski/4FRNT-Renegade.html?force_sid=a113521df3ee52d8e638e2b9cd74151c. No import fees or anything (in the EU), but I don't know how much shipping would cost.

SportPursuit (UK flash sales site) had 4FRNT last Autumn at really good prices, I got some EHPs for around 200 quid. I'm hoping they might have Rens at a similar time next season, but who knows...

Hmmm, they certainly look/sound good and if I could get them at a good price Id be keen - will check those links out.

Any thoughts about putting my Marker Griffons on the Opus' or the Renegades for that matter? Not sure if they would be 'hefty' enough but Id prefer not to get new bindings....

Cheers, Mike

KenMan, IMO unless you're touring, hucking big cliffs to non-powder landings, or racing, bindings don't make that much difference. Especially at your weight.

But then I swap dynafits and marker barons between all my skis, so what do I know?

I would have a look at Black Crows Nocta's brilliant powder ski but surprisingly fun in other conditions or if you can wait for the Atris, I am heading to japan next january and will be taking next seasons black crow atris which is sligtly narrower width than nocta but better in all round conditions, skied the test skis in it this year and is awesome, will be mounting with dynafit beast 14 probably, have been on barons this season but hopefully the beast 14 will be a one binding do it all as barons was heavy to tour.

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

Had the whitedot redeemers out on my first trip to Jap this year.
They absolutely blew me away for float and chargeability (that's a word right?) but were still nimble and playful to throw around in the tree's. I'm a bit taller and heavier than you so had the 189's but never felt the length was too much at any time. Highly recommend them.

If you like the Nomads you will love Shamans and go a size down, 173.

They were good fun, but not what I'm looking for.

Now if I was 20 years younger and jumping off stuff then look out Smile

Mike Pow, Great vid and really shows the difference in floatation. I find the slightly narrower Line SFB's a good compromise in BC powder. I've never felt the need to go any wider than SFBs and they are super nimble in the trees.

Opus will be perfect. They're not the stiffest ski, so if you can charge on your nomads then get the opus as a fat float play ski.
