Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A month away, where to stay?

Hello all

I'm thinking about spending next January in the alps. I did this a few years ago, when I hired an apartment in Les Arcs, the Charmettoger area of 1800.

Now I'm trying to decide where to go next year. Les Arcs was good because of the great ski area, easy access by train to BsM, then funicular and shuttle bus to apartment. BsM was close enough to pop down in the evening and stock up at the supermarket and it was a straight forward journey for friends to come out and stay, which helped with the cost of the apartment.

Part of me thinks just head back to Les Arcs, or maybe Bourg St Maurice (cheaper with easier access to near by resorts), but then it would be good to try somewhere else. So where? It needs to be a good sized ski area, maybe with easy access to other resorts. Some challenging pistes and access to some (not so challenging!) off piste. Ideally close to a town where you don't have to pay resort prices for shopping, or an actual town with easy resort access (I imagine apartment rental would be cheaper too). Last time, when I didn't have visitors, I pretty much skied by myself. This time it would be good to be somewhere it would be easy to meet with like minded individuals.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

eversolazy, I did 9 weeks this year in Les Deux Alpes and am doing similar next year. There or Alpe D'Huez would fit the bill. Close to Bourg D'Oisans and other resorts nearby; Serre Chevalier plus lots of smaller ones, many covered by lift pass. Probably not quite as easy (although not impossible) without a car though.

eversolazy, Briancon and Serre Chevalier would be very possible without a car. You can arrive by train and be in your apartment in just a few minutes. Access to Montgenevre, Put St Vincent and Milky Way on the lift pass, as well as Alpe D'Huez and Deux-Alpes (although they are less accessible without a car).

Morzine? With a month long rental you'd probably get some good deals on accom.

Will you have a car? If not, then the following probably won't be of interest, but for anyone else thinking along similar lines...

We have a guest who's stayed for the month of January 3 years in a row - Megeve "relax" season pass was 250 euros this year - that's all the Evasion Mont Blanc except Les Contamines, so 300+ km, Monday to Friday. It comes with 3 half price day passes to use in other local areas (or not local if you can be bothered to drive off elsewhere - think it's any Haute Savoie resort - but, say, from here, the nearest lifts in La Clusaz are only 15 minutes' drive, whilst the Espace Diamant loyalty card for 10 euros means that every Saturday is only 19 euros - again the nearest lift is only 15 minutes' drive but there are various access points to both the Aravis and Espace Diamant areas in relatively close proximity. Or you could take a day off from skiing wink He has different friends come and visit over the month, but they are happy to hang out in our bar in the evenings for a bit of social interaction. Now that might not be your cup of tea at all, but basing yourself somewhere that you can take advantage of that sort of off-peak season pass (not necessarily at our place obviously) would seem like a good idea.

Thanks everyone, those are great suggestions.

Here's a rather basic question. You know when in posts it says that the snowheads' details are in their signature, where exactly is that? I can't seem to see anyone's details.

Thanks

eversolazy, it is normally at the bottom of their posts, but you can barely read them on a phone, do maybe that of the browser that you are using?

If it was me I'd head to the Zillertal. Massive amount of skiing on one pass, all easily accessible by rail/bus. I'd base myself in a village close to Kaltenbach, 'cos that's my favourite ski area in the whole valley. All the towns have real supermarkets charging sensible prices. Mayrhofen has the most British visitors so you might want to base yourself there if you were looking to find people to ski or socialise with.
