Poster: A snowHead
|
Just a heads up for a documentary tonight, no not the tale of an epic Snowheads bash ski descent after a long lunch but the story of Jamie Andrew who was stranded in a blizzard on the Droites for five days with his friend Jamie Fisher who died of exposure in temperatures of -30C. Andrew was rescued but had all four limbs amputated due to frostbite. With the help of physiotherapy and prosthetics he not only learned to walk again, but within a year began snowboarding and eventually returned to mountaineering. This documentary follows Jamie as he takes on the biggest challenge of his life as he attempts to climb the Matterhorn in the Pennine Alps on the Swiss-Italian border.

His mum was my Chemistry teacher at school. An inspiring story and he also has a book out, which is excellent.

That must be the first TV programme that I've intentionally watched in about 5 years. Well worth watching!

Great documentary, amazing courage with those injuries! I was surprised though that they decided to turn around so close to the top, yes, Jamie was slower than anticipated, but they could have summited and then overnighted in the Solvay hut with a night's rest before descending the following morning.........

KenX, I initially thought as you did regarding doing the descent the following morning. After some reflection, however, I decided that the programme was as much about how Jamie's accident and subsequent life had shaped his thinking and the person he is today, as it was about surmounting the incredible challenge he had set himself.

I thought the same about the Solvay hut but apparently it is only for emergency use so a professional guide would not plan on it's use I guess. Could they have used the Hornli hut though?
The decision making on turnaround was one of the interesting parts I thought - they decided to press on from the Solvay hut despite being beyond their turnaround time so it was not lack of flexibility but a call based on the speed and capability of the party.
Top guy and a remarkable can do attitude.
Quite liked the look of the route - great exposure but didn't look too hard. Then again I haven't climbed for about 25 years!

Didn't catch the film but his book, "Life and Limb" is an excellent read.
