Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
I'm doing a season in New Zealand this summer/winter (however you want to view it), and I think at some point while I'm out there I will need a new pair of ski boots, based on how long people say they are meant to last for.
So I was wondering if the prices are similar out there as they are at home?
Thanks,
Lewis.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I regularly export gear to NZ as stuff's so expensive there & the choice is limited. Buy here.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Okay, cheers. Slightly annoying as it means I'll have to leave a pair of boots with a bit of life left in them at home! But I should be able to pick up a good bargain with it being nearly the end of the season now.

lewisb22, spyderjon, Is correct. If you can bring your gear you will be better off as long as you don't get burned for extra weight by the airline. Where are you planning on spending the season?

lewisb22, Good luck with the job. They have been spending money up there over the summer with 50 new snow guns, a new chairlift, work on the car parks and major work on the road. I should be a good place to work.

Sarge McSarge, thanks a lot. Yeah, I was reading about that last night, all very exciting! Fingers crossed! If I'm successful I'll let you know, would be nice to get some local information about Queenstown and the ski areas.

lewisb22,
Have a great time but just to be aware of a local difficulty - not unsurmountable but can be a hassle. I recall sharing a garage floor with a mate and other critters for a couple of weeks way,way back in the dim dark past and the situation doesn't appear to have improved a lot. Mind you, then I inveigled my way into a basement with five other bums and... heating - talk about luxury.

Big Paua,
Thanks for the heads up. Heating isn't the be all and end all for me... I went to uni in Sheffield and lived in an old Victorian terraced house with single-glazed windows so I'm fairly used to it. I'm staying in a hostel for the first month I'm there, so hopefully can find something after.

Sheffield, eh? Good training!
For the true Kiwi skiing experience, I cannot advise you strongly enough to build in some time to visit the Canterbury Club fields, particularly Craigieburn. All of them are hard to access unless you have a car (and a hardy one at that) but worth every bit of hassle to get there. Not that it doesn't have its attractions but Q'town tends to focus on our Aussie cuzzins....and Aucklanders (yuk!).
Wanaka is v cool and you gotta ride Treble Cone. I'm hoping to fit in a couple of days sliding there in September this year in homage to my misspent youth on that marvellous hill.
sH Dot will probably be along soon to extoll the virtures of his beloved North Island ski areas, Whakapapa (pronounced "Fukapapa") and Ruapehu. His info will be perfectly correct and accurate but as a native South Islander, I'm protocol-bound to insist you should give the south first priority, eh Dot?
And yes, buying gear in Kiwiland is stupid expensive.
