One of the big costs over here is the ski pass pricing for the DIY traveller especially the short or repeat trip visitor. If you are heading this way next year it could be well worth buying a season pass now and sort your trip dates later . . .
This is just one bargain . . .

With day pass rates well over $100 at peak times you can work out the value yourself. My Copper pass was $500

Lechbob, That's mine but I bought it at the beginning of the season. Heading to Steamboat next week.

I can't understand why anyone would ski in the USA unless they were desperate and they lived nearby. Small resorts with limited mileage full of aggressive locals peeling their toes all the time, it's horribly cold and it's so much easier and cheaper to get a flight to the Alps.

It is a different kind of skiing with controlled 'off piste' which is why the resorts advertise area (acres) than than kms of piste. It also snows much more in many areas with the locals complaining about the snow if they can hear their skis.

I have wanted to ski steamboat for a while but the lift pass is so expensive. I guess you have the RMSP+

Sorry, narc. I was just cheekily parodying a snorehead or two in another thread.

Lechbob, yup But seriously, for anyone planning a US trip, buying a season pass for the next year is a real investment and makes the dates of the trip immaterial whether high or low season or holiday period.

If you think USA ski resorts are small with limited mileage, what about Japan. Japanese ski resorts are tiny and expensive.
I have an Epic Pass for the last couple of seasons and will get a Tahoe Local Pass next year.

Sorry USA resorts are smaller and more expensive than Japanese resorts - there are a couple of ski areas bigger than anything in north america and lift passes (on a day pass comparison) are a fraction of the USA

Masque, Please let me know what you think about Steamboat, whether or not it lives up to the hype. I see good value accommodation available. I had the RMSP 3 years ago, so have an account with them & think I can get the + pass on line. The 6 days skiing at steamboat alone would make getting the season pass a saving. My problem is getting buddies to commit early enough.

I had the Epic pass in Breckenridge this year then went and did my ACL on the 3rd day so perhaps not the best value
