Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

NZ - Turoa and / or Ruapehu (July 2014)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi. So now that my skiing for the season is done (came back from Mayrhofen on Sunday), it is time to start looking to the next fix snowHead

We'll be off to NZ last week of July. Can anyone recommend places to stay at/near these resorts? I know Okahune is the nearest town, but am hoping for specifics about hotels/lodges/guest houses/holiday homes/etc.

It needs to be suitable for little kids (5 and 2) too, so (sadly) we won't be able to do "youth hostel" type places.

Any ideas about childcare and child lessons?

Thanks all!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Chateau Tongariro Hotel is the best place to stay near Ruapehu - 10 minute drive to the bottom of the slopes - but it is a little pricey. Have a play room for kids and a little pool that seemed kid-friendly. It's generally quite swanky (or perhaps, pretentious) but my main tip is don't trust the barman to make a Manhattan correctly. They think they know, but they don't really.

boardiac, We stayed here http://plateaulodge.co.nz/ , a few years ago admittedly, which is nearer to Whakapapa than Turoa. Not a plush place but family run, the one son had done at least one season in the alps. My experience in NZ was that the bigger hotels were very poor, but maybe we were unlucky, and the owner run lodges were the best place to stay to get local info with generally very easy going people. Although we were right at the end of the season in September I enjoyed it immensely. Completely different experience from euro alpine resorts. No trouble with queue pushing there, they have a very organised system that fills every seat.
