Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Length for Indoor Slopes?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Planning to ski indoors regularly this spring and summer in an attempt to improve technique before next season.

I'm thinking about buying a cheap pair of ski' s for use indoors and wondered if there was any conventional thinking on ski length for indoor slopes and whether people tend to use a shorter length to allow shorter snappier turns?

FWIW I usually ski 5-10cm (depending on what they have for hire) shorter indoors than outside because I've been told it is easier to do so. This brings a ski to about chin height on me.

maybe cut down from 202 to 192 as it's difficult to get the former up to spped in the space available.

If you're buying specifically to use indoors buy a cheap pair of slalom skis.

Megamum, cheers for that, pretty much confirmed what I was thinking.

Mosha Marc, the problem with using my current (good) ski's is that they'll forever need waxing and maintaining which is a faff and costs money. Plus, they wont be as much fun to ski on a short, not very steep slope.

rob@rar, that's the plan, just wanted to see what thoughts were on length. Decathlon have a pair of brand new Head Rev 70's with bindings for £170 - bargain.

For me SL skis make indoor practice really worthwhile, the tight sidecut and strong edge grip allowing work on carving skills without getting to the bottom in 2 turns.

Hopefully will be good fun indoors and gives me an extra option when I go away if conditions aren't great.

If you're going to be going a lot, then I'd invest in some tuning kit. That snodome snow really gets the wax off your bases.

It'll pay you back quickly, it's cheaper than new skis and you can charge your mates in beer or wine to do theirs.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

And if you don't already service your own kit thepisteoffice.com isn't that far from Cheshire, Jon's tuning half day course is great.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

What length did you go for in the end, and was it indeed shorter than your usual?

davkt, have looked at Jon's tuning course before. Think I'll get on that. Plan is to ski twice a month plus a performance course / lesson once a month each too.

balernoStu, went for 156cm, compared to my normal 165's. Think they have a 10m turning radius!

I've still got my first set of Elan wave magics in a 160 that I am planning to wax up and use indoors this year on the basis that they might be better than the 'house' hire skis. Mind you I am already waxing my own skis so service won't be a problem though maybe someone will recommend a wax that is better for the job than what I have for regular outdoors please?

Nice pair of Storm Inferno Race skis are my snowdome favourites, though my original Elan Speedwave 12s come out to play sometimes as well, both around 165 where as my all mountains Storm Rages, GSish Storm Crossfires and just fun Movement Jams are in the mid to high 170s
nickr, You won't regret Jons course, unbelivable how much you learn in half a day, though when go budget for buying one of his tool kits as you'll want one by the end of the course!

davkt, was looking at it again last night. My wife's family are from the midlands so think I might book a course next time we're down.

Wow that is turny, nearly as tight as the skis used by the kids! My indoor skis are 155 with radius '>11.5m', and the skis I use on proper hills are between 163 and 182cm, so yes I've gone down a bit in size too.
