Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

40th birthday treat - Ski help

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
It is coming to that point in my life when I can use a birthday to actually get something worthwhile. It has been nearly 10 years since I bought my last pair of skis; Volkl All Stars. I absolutely love them and the only 2 reasons I am buying new ones is because of the afore mentioned birthday and they are pretty thrashed. I am heart-set on Volkl even though I am fully expecting loads of remarks abut being blinkered, other brands out there, etc. but I will be buying Volkl.

I love the stiffness of my All Stars and have been considering Code UVO although, since it is a special occasion and will probably be buying skis to last another 10 years, would consider splashing out on V Werks RTMs.

My new option though, which looks tempting is V Werks Katana. Lots of reviews go on about how good they are on piste as well as off piste. I don't venture off piste. Partly because I have never been any good (not worked at it enough) and partly cos I didn't really have confidence in All Stars (I am a bad workman in this respect, so not blaming tools). Anyway, reviews say they are excellent off piste so if I go for these, would be much more willing to learn.

In short my three Volkl choices are:
- Code UVO
- V Werks RTM
- V Werks Katana

How much better are V Werks RTMs than code UVO?
If Katana, wouldn't have the foggiest which bindings to go for.

What do you think?

Katana is a serious ski - it's in the "true All mountain" sweetspot of 112mm waist which means it is mainly for off piste and will be ok ish on, not a good piste ski that will also handle a bit off.

Why not buy cheap buy twice you could have a regular Mantra/Goat and a RTM for the price of a V werks Katana?

IF you are have a budget of £1000, I think I would buy two sets of skis a good quality piste ski and an all mountain ski. Buying skis for £1000 plus seems bonkers.

Heeded advice and bought cheaper. Went for RTM84 176cm. Edge and Wax have a sale until Sunday for 12% off end of season sale price so got them for £554. Only problem now is I am not skiing til December so will have to look at them a lot!
Thanks

Dougie, good decision. I've been on RTM 81s this season. Fantastic ski, and when all is said and done as good as my Mantras in almost all snow conditions you usually come up against in Austria & Germany, plus absolutely leave them standing on icy pistes.

igLou, didn't you have to pay import tax though? Saw a decent price on V Werks but import tax would have made it about the same.

Dougie, yep, no problem with import tax - €20 iirc for delivery (which is quick and trackable)

He would have liked the V-werks I suspect but a bit out of our price range Laughing
