Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mountain Heaven? La Rosiere?

Anyone been to La Rosiere with Mountain Heaven? Are they any good? Is La Rosiere/La Thuile any good? It looks like it would suit us well.

Thuile side is generally better as lower runs are tough and interesting, and there is an interesting plateau at the top. Rosiere side is a bit samey, but does have the Fontaine Froide red which is a belter by any standards, and easily the best run in the domain. The link over is horrid, especially Ros->Thuile as it's a long exhausting exposed drag. Particularly terrible for boarders, but grim for anyone.

There's a looooong red on the rhs of the piste map which is basically a road. Forever. Avoid it.

If the Las Ros/La Thuile link is open, then it makes for a decent area to ski. If not, and as mentioned, La Ros can be a bit "samey"/limited for mainly piste-skiing, mid-intermediates and above. Agree, Fontaine Froide is a top run.

If you have children, the south-facing slopes are a definite bonus and some of the mountain restaurants are very pleasant with their sunny terraces (La Ros side).

Can't help re Mountain Heaven.

I can`t help with Mountain Heaven either, but my family, aged 20 to 56, one beginner, 3 mad young males (who have skied since early childhood) and a couple of more sedate more mature skiers enjoyed a weeks skiing based in La Ros over Xmas 2012. Those that went over to La Thuile moaned a bit about the link but it did not bother them over much!

We had a lovely holiday in La Rosiere with children aged 3 and 6 - New Year 2009. It seems a pretty snow sure resort and even early in the season we were able to ski the long Fontaine Froide mentioned above..that run and the smell of woodsmoke from the café at the bottom of the run was the skiing highlight for me. snowHead
If any of your party enjoy swimming and spa I'd recommend the cimes blanches apts which are at the foot of the slopes and in the newer Les Eucharts area.

Whilst some of the runs on the La Rosiere side are slightly samey we enjoyed skiing in the San Bernando and La Thuile areas. It was fun going over to Italy for lunch!

I think the drawback when we went was the biting wind - some of the chairlifts were quite slow and it wasn't pleasant sitting on them in the wind. We invested in balaclavas.

I can't help on Mountain Heaven but can on La Roz - I personally really like the place and have skied it in 2012 and the first week of Feb this year, but the thing I have learnt about this forum is that everyone has an opinion and that ski venues are like Marmite for everyone - what someone loves, there is someone else that hates it, and that even goes for the unhateable.
Its a really friendly, well laid out resort with drop dead scenery as it is surrounded by high peaks. It has a couple of nice bars, a few nice restaurants and is a distinct pleasure off the slopes, divided between La Roz itself and the satellite and stil charming village of Eucherts.
The skiing is great, and it has an excellent snow record but can get a bit slushy in and around resort in the afternoons as South facing and really gets the sun.
It has two downsides: the link with La Thuile, whilst I personally don't mind it too much, it is for some a complete pain in the backside - it has a trickyish red before it and the drag is never ending, particularly if you do both stages. Its worth it as La Thuile does add considerable variety and break the week up, but you do need to psyche yourself up for the trip. The other downside is the wind - it can sock in and on one day in our last week it blew and blew, giving us a day of horizontal snow blown at bullet velocity - unpleasant (but still better than work) and not that many trees to shelter in, other than the epic Fontaine Froide and the gentle greens to the right of the main slope. Dont forget your neck warmer to pull up over your faces.
Ive done a chalet, with Ski Olympic and self catered this time. Both trips are up there with the best. Unless you are a real mileage cruncher who never likes to ski the same piste twice I think its a fabulous place.

Conrad Bool, Thanks, we are very happy repeating a run over and over if it's a good one. Telly tubbies runs we call them, "again again again". We like Are in Sweden very much and I think it's a similar size to La Roz. Sounds good for us.

thecramps, we enjoyed our first holiday there enough to go back the next year, with ski Olympic (excellent) both times. We gave up on the drag to Italy after an 11 year old was lifted off her feet for about 30 yards by the drag lift and would have been weeping with her cold feet had she not been a tough little nut (she landed back on her skis after the flight but we decided to call it a day anyway). The scenery is indeed lovely. It's not a place for people seeking big mileage and big challenges, but it doesn't sound as if you are!

The drag to Italy didn't do that this time or indeed in 2012 when I took my then 12 year old daughter. It was gentle but v long and is sometimes disconcertingly downhill. The only drag with a tension issue on this trip was the left hand side of the main drag lift on the right hand side of the home run looking uphill.

We have been several times in big groups including young kids. We have never experienced a problem with the first drag across to La Thuile. We have even had a disabled child skier manage it standing between the skis of an able bodied adult. The link can get blowy but it also gets some snow. People are scared of it because the only way out is back down the track.
Here is a pic taken on an Easter holiday; kids all in front, fantastic day and that much snow that despite the track being dug out by a piste basher , the cable still came down level with my head!!
Simply Awesome!

I have a La Rosiere pass this season and have been riding odd days there for years.

Just my 2p worth regarding the link-to-Italy drag-lift. It is longer than your average drag-lift, but other than that I would be perfectly happy describing it as "trivial". It is not fast, not steep and doesn't have much kick at the start. I'm a snowboarder, so feel very qualified to make this statement!

In 7 years of taking (ski hosting! OMG!) people over to La Thuile, I think I can remember 2 people falling off it. One was a snowboarder who had NEVER used a drag lift before (and she made it far enough up that she just walked the last bit) and the other was a small child who made it up at the second attempt.

There are a few other drags on the La Rosiere side, but none of them are essential for making your way around the mountain (and a couple of them are due to be replaced with chairs in the near future).

thecramps, been to La Rosiere twice not with mountain heaven though, the first time 4 years ago, had an excellent week at the end of January but it was very cold and windy, went in January this year as my daughter is working there had a fantastic week, the link to Italy isn't that bad, you don't have to do both the drag lifts, we got off the first then skied to a chair, went up and skied a really long tree lined run into La Thuile, we are going again this Sunday and can't wait! As for repeating the same run, there's a short run through the tress La Foret? My boys spent most of the holiday repeating this run again and again, little bumps and jumps to play on, so much fun, it's not a huge linked area hence why some don't like it, and there's 19 hairpin bends to endure on the coach which can cause some to be ill, but we've had great times there and as I say will be there again next week! And there's tonnes of snow too snowHead

Been to La Ros at NY and going back next NY. Its not a huge resort but for my group of friends it ticks lots of boxes. I am not sure we will do three years on the bounce as I do like to visit different places but it is a very nice resort. Both Evo 2 and ESF get good reviews and my friends and I raved about both.

Yes, I went there with a group of 10 in February and stayed in Chalet Thomas. All I can say is that is Mountain Heaven is badly run company who take a very amatuer approach to dealing with their customers!

We will not be using them and would not recommend them to anyone.

+1

Many "lurkers" sign up and post because of something that compels them to do so. No problem. However, without context or explanation, I personally think posts like this should be censored until the person properly explains their position/reason.

+1 they've obviously had a bad holiday. Should at least explain why. ITs fair enough to comment on MH given that the poster sought views about them.
