Poster: A snowHead
|
Now that it is nearly 6 weeks until my ski holiday, I am starting to get excited and trying to look at long range weather forecasts.
The longest I am finding isn't very long.
Are there any general long range weather forecasts available giving general temperature / weather trends? We are going to Les Deux Alpes if that affects the answers in any way. Certainly the conditions look great at the minute but comparing snow depths at the bottom to this time last year, there is quite a lot less.
Thanks

but still longer than makes any kind of sense. Might as well put a scarf over your head and peer into a crystal ball, NickyJ. With my own Mystic Meg hat on I'd be very surprised if there weren't a lot of great skiing in L2A in 6 weeks. Snow depths are above average (well, they are in the northern Alps, don't actually know about L2A).

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Once you start looking at snow forecasts regularly, you will begin to notice that what is predicted for even a few days away is often radically different from what actually happens, and in fact you can see the forecast chopping and changing as the day approaches. The mountains have their own weather, which is fickle and volatile. So I would say that any long range weather forecasts for the mountains are inherently worthless.

pam w, that sounds good.
I thought that they have methods of predicting general temperature trends I am not thinking specific lots of snow etc but more are they expecting it to stay pretty mild as I get the impression that it hasn't just been the uk which has had a milder than average winter? Or if they are expecting it be be very warm for April.

Any forecast more than five days out is educated guesswork at best. Even the most sophisticated modelling software gets less reliable the longer the time frame. Any forecast of April's weather I'll need a large accompanying pinch of salt.
Anybody remember the Express headlines from November predicting coldest, snowiest winter in 100 years?? Great headlines but no scientific basis.
Just keep your fingers crossed - it'll be great!!!!

Hmm - oh well. Yes i remember hearing about that.... so thought must get a sledge before we get some snow rather than thinking about it when we actually get some. It is still unused

Sorry, but I caused this mild, snow-free winter by buying a new set of all-season tyres for my car, at some expense.

Yep - it was your comment that reminded me. Thankfully we were able to borrow a friends last year when the snow hit so the kids didn't miss out.

NickyJ, all that has been posted here has already been stated many times on nozawaonsen's excellent Weather Thread.
There are a host of sites claiming Long Term Weather Forecast. They are usually so vague as to be useless.
Some try and be specific, but you would do as well yourself throwing dice.

It's also worth remembering that last year was a cracking year for snow, so any comparisons will always look a bit disappointing!
