Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Film of an avalanche in Südtirol on 6th Feb 2014

I'm not sure if this has been posted already but it is pretty incredible to watch. So much power! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Luckily nobody was hurt and only one farmhouse lightly damaged, although I suspect a couple of garages/stalls/sheds were flattened. 15 people had to be evacuated.

wow. pretty amazing that it just went on and on. Almost more like a mudslide or a river in flood than an avalanche.

Incredible. I've only seen a couple of little ones in real life. That's ludicrous.

That's an amazing bit of film. Were they at any point saying "How about we get the hell out of here, my friend?"

I thought it resembled a flow of lava - pretty unstoppable!! However, it would be a brilliant example to demonstrate a lecture on erosion to school kids, you can quite understand how massive events like that can change the landscape.

shoogly, no, it was during the later part where the body of snow crept creeping forward and the blocks were kind of tumbling off of the front of it. When you see TV pics of big black/red lava flows moving slowly - at that point where they just start to creep along - I just thought the movement was similar. I then went down the route of the strangeness that two things at such opposite ends of the spectrum could move in such a similar manner - sorry just doing an anorak moment Embarassed . I like the concept of erosion and the changes that the earth can make under it's own devices.

That is the most dramatic footage I have seen of an avalanche developing and progressing.

It is the part of St. Leonard in Passiertal that starts the climb up to the Timmelsjoch Pass. The part is called Moos in Passiertal. Just put that into Google map and you will see it is south of the pass. The Gurgls (Ober- and Hochgurgl) are over the other side of the pass from here. I drove through this village last summer.
