Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Join off piste guided group? Vallee Blanche or similar

I have the prospect of a solo weekend snowboarding, and was thinking about doing something like the Vallee Blanch. Wondering whether there are guided groups you can join to keep the costs down, rather than splashing out on a guide all to myself.

Any recommendations?

Equally, I'm not restricted to the Vallee Blanche. It could be any good off-piste area in Europe within a couple of hours of the closest airport.

It depends how good a slider you are. The normal route down the Vallee Blanche is spectacular but quite dull from the skiing point of view (there are more interesting alternative routes). I imagine there must be groups to join there though I don't know. I think you'd have a more interesting day of actual sliding with a guide further up the valley in Argentierre doing the Pas de Chevre etc, but you could do a day in each. Personally I'd fly to Innsbruck and take bus D to the train station (20 min),and take the train to St Anton (about an hour). Piste to Powder are a bit expensive but do guided groups at several standards.

Nice video - but I think the first couple of minutes has convinced me that if I ever do that route I'll take some crampons and solo the descent of the Midi arete rather than rope up with a group of random punters. And wait for the cable car release to disperse first.
