Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Actually, this is a specific request for any such publications covering Val Thorens. Do they exist? If they do, are they any good, or are they perhaps dangerous in the sense that they may tempt the inexperienced (or even the experienced) to take incalculable risks. You can guess that its one of my progeny that asked the question!

Lots of people here will say that skiing off-piste without a guide is dangerous, and they're right, it's more dangerous than skiing off-piste with a guide, and more dangerous than skiing on piste. But I was a mountaineer before I was a skier and a certain level of risk is inevitable - it's very much a personal thing. I've got the book Arno recommended (though a much earlier edition) and several more of the Vamos or Ciccerone books and they will revolutionise your enjoyment of skiing if you are just a piste skier. But there's always a chance that they will also kill you...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Rishie, not sure where you will get them in the UK as Cordee currently showing out of stock.

Various places over the internet in France do appear to have them eg http://livre.fnac.com/a2222685/Collectif-Les-3-vallees-hors-pistes

The Presse in Meribel etc will be as good a bet as any once in resort (same goes for the Givois book ).

Lizzard, thats the ski touring book (I'm getting deja vu here?), which is mostly not very useful if you are just after lift-served off piste in the 3V.

I have a funny feeling the 3V vamos book is out of print currently.
