Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

traabs or G3s?

Hi

Thinking about an alpine touring setup. Think I've got the boots sorted due to a good fit, bindings I was thinking of going for pin type dynafits as I found them easy to use and crazy light under foot. But the skis???? The two that I seem to be going towards based on the two shops I've been in are g3 districts and traab Volares. I have skied the traabs a bit and found them super light but also very good on the down. I have been told the G3s are something else. Can anyone provide an opinion on either ski?

The guy in the shop in Aviemore told me brands don't really matter anymore when it comes to skis, and its just knowing the midski size that you want and the rocker type? Is this correct, and how do you figer out what you want?

The best way is to try the skis yourself. Trab are known for very light, skinny skis. Your weight makes a big difference plus your fitness in relation to the people you will tour with (if they are fitter and have a lighter setup then you could be well knackered out for the run down).

Try the Völkl Nunataq or DPS Wailer 99 if you get the chance.

Here's a test in german (1 = Best, "Testsieger" = "test winner")

Guys in shops = 1
Test skis =10 (obtained from guys in shops)

Unless you are racing don't go too light at the expense of downhill performance.

I had G3's and sold them because they were poor in hard conditions and crap on ice.
Dynafit bindings have pre release issues, a lot of people seem obsessed by weight for the uphill, but then suffer on the descent with lightweight skis.
Don't really understand it myself as most people go up to enjoy the descent.
Ive been skiing and touring on some fisher watea 88 this season, 70 days this season so far in all conditions no problems.
Obviously not as good as an out and piste ski on ice, but not bad...
I skied with an Italian guide using the Trabs who rated them, and we were skiing both powder and ice on the Preseena glacier area.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

My Dynafits have never pre-released but I do follow these tips ....

... and set them up with a dynafit heel spacer.

Also which G3 skis? Sullying an entire brand because you didn't like one ski seems a bit off... might just have needed a tune from the description given. Wink
