Poster: A snowHead

Preparing my daughters ski gear for her next trip I noticed the goggles needed a quick clean. I used a damp cloth and wiped inside and out. However, inside was worse than when I started. The more I cleaned the more the inside smudged. I have now removed all smears using just a damp cloth but it took a fair bit of cleaning.
I cant help but think I have just done something I should not have. Have I removed some sort of protective layer?

Probably more like removed a layer of assorted finger grease! My kids goggles need regular cleans and I just use some warm soapy water on them.

I've found some goggles react badly to some detergents. Unless you can be sure the cloth was clean and free of any detergent, it could have affected the goggle coating. I've seen some go almost ripply. I only ever use a soft, goggle cleaning cloth now, and rarely, if ever, use any cleaning agents

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I guess the cloth must have had some soap or detergent on it despite me rinsing it out. I guess I have just removed the anti fog coating from the inside. Oops. Off to Decathlon this week to get new goggles then as she will be skiing on Sunday. Doh!

Yes. You should never wipe the inside of Goggles when damp, for this exact reason. Don't even need detergent. You have removed the anti-fog coating. Impressed you got it off, most of the time you end up with a hazy mess and you might as well junk the lenses.

Which product would clean the inside coating off completely once smeared ?... then a lens could be reused as a spare.
Has anyone tried a product with any success to remove inner smeared lens coatings?

sixspeed, I thought as much. Once I had started there was no stopping as it got worse before it got better. I will add these goggles to the spares pile for my wife's school ski trip and buy some new ones.

It's a shame, and it isn't made quite as clear as it should be.
I've been lucky and became aware before I damaged any of my own lenses. I learnt through a friend's bad luck though - he borrowed some friends Oakley's and made the mistake of trying to do the same thing (wiping the inside of the lens when it was damp). Completely hazed up and had to buy his pal another pair, as well as some more for himself as he couldn't use the knackered ones for the rest of the holiday!

Depending how much you want to spend and if they fit the Head Horizion Race goggles reduced to £59.99 with 4 lens kit down to £1 is a cracking deal. They fit my 14 yo very nicely (she isn't having them though, these are mine!)

davkt, This is for my 5 year old girl. She has 1 week of lessons under her belt and will hopefully be doing some blues next week. I will hold off spending £60 on goggles as she will probably lose/break them or get the inside dirty again.

I may do. Her last pair were Trespass and cost about £12. Lovely pink colour.

You know it makes sense.

Mike-H, you might well find that the goggles are still fine. Why not give them a go and see before splashing out on a new pair?

All sorts of lovely (if you are under 10) coloured kids goggles in the Nottingham Decathlon when I was in at the end of last week.

davkt, I will drop by Decathlon near me (Coventry) this week or drop into the Trespass in the town. And I will never clean goggles again with a damp cloth, especially mine.

Mike-H, If you can clean it up on the inside (degreaser, meths??), then anti-fog spray is easily available. I don't know how well it works though.

kieranm, The problem is I worry that my little girl will be up a mountain when she discovers they do not work. A new pair at £10-15 gives me peace of mind as I am not going on this trip. The wife is taking her on a school trip.
