Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, quick question, I'm off to la Tania on Sat, and hiring a car from Grenoble. What's the view on adding snow chains to the care hire agreement; are these generally necessary to get up to or back from La Tania. There's some snow forecast for Sat, but not significant, obviously the return journey is an unknown.
Thanks in advance
Brian

Might not be necessary but is a legal requirement to carry them.
If you need to buy them because you're stopped at a check stop not only do you risk a fine (€90?? IIRC) you then will have to buy chains locally which will cost you c€80 for the cheapest of cheap sets being sold nearest to the check point!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Get them! You really don't want to be the one at the head of the jam up the mountain with a bunch of disgruntled motorists behind you! What's more, snowforecast.com says it's going to snow on Saturday.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Last time I was in La Tania in Feb 13, I was staying at the top end of the village (there's a good 100m between the village base and the chalets at the top). It was very touch and go getting up there on my winter tyres, and probably the closest I've ever come to chaining up in 2 years of living in the Alps. Some steep narrow roads, only partially cleared of snow.
If your lodgings are at the base of the village, that's a main road and will be better maintained. But you still have to come up a fairly hairpin infested road through St Bon and Bozel. I think it would be worth having them.

In my view you buy/book/carry snow chains not so much because you might actually need them, but because they give you peace of mind. Absolutely zero need to worry what the road conditions will be like, because you KNOW that you will be OK.

brianr, the forecast is for quite a lot of snow this weekend and throughout next week. You may need those snow chains fitted to get up the mountain...or back down again. I'd suggest taking them out of their box and seeing how they are fitted somewhere warmer first. Unless of course you're already a tried and tested snow chain fitter. My experience is that some are fairly easy to fit...but others a nightmare.

brianr, with a hire car double check the chains they give you are actually the correct size for the car!
