Poster: A snowHead
|
According to the traffic lights on this Belgian tourism site http://www.catpw.be/FR/ski.htm some of the small Belgian 'resorts' are open and reporting 20-40cm of snow.
I recall that we even had Snowheads living close to one of them
Baraque seems to the biggest of the open ones. However its Website doesn't have a webcam, so can't see what its like.
Any local feedback.
Oh, did I mention these are only 2.5 hours from Calais?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I'm closest to the Baraque, we've got about 30-40cm snow right now but we're not predicted any more for the next few days and the temperature is approaching zero so I'm not expecting it to last.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Oh well. Here's hoping
We're seriously considering a long weekend trip to the Spa/Stavelot area during the winter to let our 3 year olds play on some snow. Being in Sussex, its less cruel to do five hours to the Ardennes than 10 hours to Scotland. We know its touch-and-go but we figure there's also the motor racing circuit and cross-country as other attractions if uplift doesn't happen. We did the Vosges last year and enjoy the offbeat destinations
Can you recommend any good two/three star hotels? The chains don't seem to have broken out of the Leige metropolitan area.

There are some chains in Spa although personally I don't rate Spa much as a nice little holiday town and prefer Malmedy.
It tends to be more gite country out here although there are hotels and B&Bs. You could check out http://www.waimes.be and http://www.robertville.be Robertville is a very cute little town with a beautiful resevoir with a beach. It also has a big dam and a castle and is about 5km from the downhill skiing at Ovifat ( http://www.skialpin-ovifat.com/ ). The Baraque Michel resides in a national park and is the "epicentre" of x-country skiing and has great walking through woods and marshland.
I have had some friends stay here http://www.hotelfagnard.be/en2/rubriek.asp?custnr=24&itemnr=7933 and they really recommended it. It's at the other end of my village and is owned by a Dutch couple so English is no problem. It's very close to Monschau in Germany which of course is famous for it's fabulous xmas market (and speeding tickets dammit! )
If you need any more info just message me and of course I can give you an up to date snow report but this site is pretty good for weather. http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/Belgium/Botrange.htm

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

SussexSnow, Hello, I saw you want to go to the Spa/Stavelot area during this winter. There is a webcam at the following adress:http://www.meteowvl.be/flash/hogevenen.php.
You also can find information on a 3 stars hotel closed to Roberville: http://www.hotelhogevenen.be/
Enjoy your Belgian trip

I think that the 20-40cm refers to the height of the mountains rather than the depth of snow.

I'm at 700m richmond, that's not bad for a "flat" country.
