Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Munich to Val Gardena transfer question

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I am arriving in Munich on Feb. 3rd around 2pm. Collect luggage and clear customs, I should be on my way by 15:30. So far I've figured train transfers to Bolzano but that's where problems start.

According to bus schedule posted on Val Gardena site the last bus from Bolzano to Selva departs around 19:00. (Bus 350?)

Is anybody aware of any later connections or at that point Taxi would be my only option?

Alternatively, any direct bus transfers from Munich airport to Selva after 15:30 ?

And last, how bad would that drive through Austria to Selva look like? Mostly highway or Alpine "tricky" road conditions?

It seems that Dolomites are the place to ski this winter, but for sure it is not easy to get to from the US.

Don't know about the buses. Certainly won't be one direct from Munich.

It's highway all the way to Bolzano (or what ever the turn off is for Selva). There are tolls though. €8.50 for a 10 day sticker for Austria, €10 each way (or thereabouts) for the Brenner pass, and maybe about €3 or so each way for the bit of Autostrada in Italy.

No direct flights into Venice from the US, transferring elsewhere would land me in Venice even later.
Would hate losing one ski day by spending the night in Munich Sad

Cheapski, Can you fly to Milan?

I drove to Val Gardena last year from St. Anton. Not sure about the roads from Munich to Innsbruck, but from Innsbruck down to the exit off the highway are pretty easy to drive. I'm betting Munich to Inssbruck is fine as well. Off the highway, there are a few miles ( maybe 10 at most) of a pretty narrow, windy highway. Its not too bad if you are used to winter driving. I'm actually landing in Geneva on Feb 2 and based on snow conditions, will probably be driving all the way to Selva Val Gardena again. Not sure if I want to take the slightly faster but much more expensive route across northern Italy, or the route through Innsbruck.

Obviously, if you can change your flight to Milan, that would be the easiest.

It's an easy drive. Motorway all the way apart from last 10 miles or so. About 3.5 hrs. Hire a car. I did this drive two weeks ago with no issues. It's all about timing to miss potential traffic (changeovers, rush hour etc) and hope for good weather. They even drive on the same side of the road as you guys.

Cheapski, I did this exact journey last week (and posted a similar question Happy ). Don't get the bus from Bolzano. Get off the train at Brixen (Bressanone) and get a connecting train from Brixen to Waidbruck (Ponte Gardena) and get the bus from there. There's a 15:04 train from Munich airport, change at Munich Ost and Brixen arriving at Waidbruck at 19:39. You'll have a bit of a wait as the next (and last) bus goes at 20:25. Note you can't get a through ticket from Munich to Waidbruck, you have to gets ticket to Brixen then buy a local ticket for the final part, but there's plenty of time to do that.

You could also get the bus from Brixen, but the connections won't work out for you, the last one goes at 18:32.

Confusingly (or conveniently?) all these buses are the 350 Happy

If you miss the bus then a taxi from Waidbruck would be a lot cheaper than a taxi from Bolzano or Brixen, so best to aim for there anyway.

Another tip; buy your tickets in advance from the Austrian Railways website (oebb.at), I found that was *much* cheaper than the prices quoted on the German or Italian sites. However, that was for a restricted ticket (i.e. only valid on a specific train), if you need flexibility the prices will likely not be different.
