Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Getting to Tignes from Geneva

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Arriving in Geneva from NZ on a late Saturday flight (9:45pm) in December.

Looking for some advice on the best way to get to the resort at a reasonable price?
Is it possible to get a shared/scheduled transfer this late in the evening?
Would it be better to book a hotel in Geneva (or some point in between) & travel to the resort the next morning?

www.altibus.com - last bus is normally 1915, www.bensbus.co.uk may run that late (the website runs to 2110 so give them a call) other than that its a night in one of the airport hotels or an eye watering private transfer. You could also e mail snowstartransfers.co.uk or coolbus.com to see if they have any late private runs to see if you can join in.

I have never used this website, but it allows you to post a request for a shared transfer on a specific date or seach for someone looking to add to a minibus on specific dates.

So you'd be looking at arriving in Tignes around 2-3 in the morning.

Hotel in Geneva,I'd have thought. Novotel around £100 for a room, I am told (haven't done it but friends have).

This does not help much, although it does suggest that the arrivals hall is better than the departures for comfort and it is open between 12am and 4am when the airport is closed.

If you are even contemplating undertaking a late night transfer in December weather after getting off a flight from New Zealand, you're made of stronger stuff than me.

There's an Ibis and a Novotel more or less across the road on Av. Louis Casai, they all have shuttle buses to pick you up. I've stayed in the Ibis and it was fine. The only downside I found was that opportunities for eating out nearby were limited; but arriving at 10 30pm I guess eating will be some way down your list.

Thanks very much for all the info....

Thinking it would be worthwhile trying to get to the resort.
Have a Saturday to Saturday apartment booked - so money saved on a Geneva hotel can go towards the transfer.
Other big plus is won't have to get up early the next morning.

I'm getting deathly silence from the letting agent, would it be a problem getting keys to an apartment at that time of the morning??

They may still be on holiday. If you tell the agency that you are going to be late then they will usually put the keys in an envelope stuck to the door of their office.

Almost certainly! Tignes is like a ghost town in mid Sep (even to the point of no restaurants open (tricky when you are renovating a kitchen).
Some of the agencies have key boxes which they give you a combination lock code so you can access your skis.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Depends on your idea of "reasonable price" & party size. One way €410 for 1-3 people.

you could always hire a car, it would be cheaper than some of those transfer prices

true, but driving in the dark, and possibly in the snow, after a flight from the Antipodes would be a bit miserable....

Try this http://www.altibus.com/ I have used it often and there is nothing cheaper (unless sharing), although not that cheap. Very reliable scheduled service and goes right into Tignes. Your arrival time in Geneva will probably be too late for last bus so you may need an overnight at Geneva.

Back after a fantastic trip.

As a warning to other solo travellers, scheduled or shared transfer services from Geneva to the Tarantaise valley i.e. Espace Killy, 3 Valleys & Paradiski etc are non existent outside peak hours.
I arrived at 9.45pm Saturday & had to shell out for a private transfer to get skiing in Tignes before Monday as there are no buses after 9.30pm on a Saturday & the 1st bus on a Sunday doesn't leave to 10am meaning a mid afternonn arrival. WTF??? - main transfer day - main airport - dozens of flights still arriving - stranded. Sad

I ended up booking a private transfer with alps2alps.com @ $250 euro & I couldn't fault their service, on time at airport, friendly driver - highly recommended.

That is when all the cheap flights arrive, crazy not to have a transfer service which would drive up into the alps at 3am in the morning when the roads are most icy!

I'm impressed by Sunline's relaxed attitude to travel.
Did you really just arrive at Geneva assuming there would be a bus?
I wish I was that relaxed.
I spend hours checking every aspect of the journey.
Are the roads ok? Is the underground running? Is all ok at the station/airport? The weather?
And all the way there I'm worrying about what i've forgotten. rolling eyes rolling eyes
