Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Guide in Selva?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm planning a last minute quick trip to the Dolomites, most likely staying in Selva. We've only got a couple of days, so depending on conditions I thought we'd "do" the Sella Ronda on day one to take a look at the area, for the second day I'm interested in looking at the off piste. I know there are some pretty strict rules about off piste in this area (all of Italy perhaps?), so given the epic conditions I'd be happy to hire a guide to take us to places that are safe (& legal!).

Has anyone got any info on guides or ski school groups that do off piste based in or around Selva?

Easy peasy. Give here a call. http://www.scuola-sci-val-gardena.com/en/Default.asp

Book Oz (Oswald Runggaldier), an instructor for half a day. Give Oz my regards and tell him that I'll see him next month. Razz

Thanks again for the links. Turns out we had plenty of fun exploring the pisted runs in our short trip so we didn't book a guide. Kind of wish we had done, the conditions last Weds were fantastic after the snow on Tuesday (shame it didn't carry on through Tuesday night though Sad ) Anyway, we found some untracked on-piste (i.e. ungroomed but marked) first thing, so we didn't totally miss out. I'll bookmark this page for next time though Happy

I bought Franceso's Freeride book. Reading that on the train back north made me want to get off and get the next train back. I suspect he's a popular guide, he certainly deserves to be with the effort he puts in to the website and the books.

From an off piste perspective is there any place thats particularly good to be based? Looking at the book I'm thinking Arraba or Corvara might be a bit closer to the action than Selva (although there is off piste everywhere of course).

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

albob, yes, read that after I got back... Already plotting a March trip. Looking at historical data it looks like late March really is the end of season for the Dolomites, is that correct? I'm used to skiing as late as mid April in the Arlberg (although a lot of the afternoons are spent "relaxing" at that time of year).

My trip there has made a big dent in my career plans; I was planning to win the lottery and buy a house in St Anton, but now I may have to buy a house in the Dolomites too...

 You know it makes sense.

SAH

people do go to the Dolomites in late March , but from my experience, I wouldn't go after the first week/10 days of march, the lower slopes are slushy from early PM (or just stick to the higher slopes..).

Your lottery plans are the same as mine... Smile
